MICM, INTEC and ADIPLAST hold a Forum on Circular Economy and Waste Management in the Plastics Industry


Santo Domingo. El Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Mipymes (MICM), the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) and the Dominican Association of the Plastic Industry (ADIPLAST) carried out the Circular Economy and Waste Management Forum in the Plastics IndustryOrganized by the Plastic Research and Training Center (CCIP), an alliance between the State, academia and industry.

The objective of the event was foster la sustainability culture and knowledge transfer y results in the plastic industry. It was aimed at senior executives of the plastics industries, related industries, academia, related public institutions and other interested parties in the plastics sector.

The opening ceremony was led by Vice Minister of Industrial Development of the MICM, Fantino Polanco; the rector of INTEC, Julio Sánchez Maríñez, and president of ADIPLAST, Manuel Lorenzo. In addition, the Vice Minister of Environmental Management of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Indhira of Jesus. 

“We, the MICM, INTEC and ADIPLAST want, every year, to hold this forum to share best practices, information, data, tools...on how to make our plastic production more sustainable,” said Vice Minister Polanco.

The MICM, together with other members of the CCIP, has trained more than 500 representatives of companies belonging to the plastics sector and related, as well as members of public and academic institutions, through programs taught by prestigious national and international institutions specialized in sustainability.

At the same time, via the Vice Ministry of Industrial Development (VDI), the MICM has demonstrated concrete results during this management, through the execution of more than 30 projects and initiatives in pursuit of quality, innovation and sustainability in the sector. locally manufactured.

In 2022, the plastic sector exported US $301.2 million, generated 10 jobs and achieved total national sales of RD $819 million.

For his part, Sánchez Maríñez, rector of INTEC, thanked the MICM and ADIPLAST for the trust placed in including that university in the creation of the CCIP. Likewise, he referred to INTEC's commitment to continue promoting the CCIP, which to date has already obtained important results.

For his part, Manuel Lorenzo, president of ADIPLAST, also valued the knowledge shared during the forum and the importance of the alliance established, emphasizing that “we are all involved and are part of an exciting journey that directs us to guarantee the sustainability of our industries and products."

From the Forum

Held in a hotel in Santo Domingo, this forum had the support of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). It included three conferences and two panels in which international and national speakers participated in sustainability and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in the plastics industry.

From the CCIP

Inaugurated on May 11, 2022, the CCIP is the result of the collaboration of MICM, INTEC and ADIPLAST. The institution seeks to promote the transfer of knowledge, technical preparation, innovation and technological development at the service of the plastics industry of the Dominican Republic.

This initiative is led by the Vice Ministry of Industrial Development (VDI), under the direction of the Vice Minister of Industrial Development Fantino Polanco.
