MICM and INTEC will strengthen training and strategic research on foreign trade and trade agreements


SANTO DOMINGO.- The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Mipymes (MICM) and the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) signed a collaboration agreement to develop training initiatives and strategic research in trade matters, production and export through the Dominican Observatory of International Trade (ODCI), which operates at the university.

During a meeting headed by the head of the MICM, Víctor -Ito- Bisonó; Julio Sánchez Maríñez, rector of INTEC; the Vice Minister of Foreign Trade, Vilma Arbaje, and the ODCI coordinator Magdalena Lizardo, the authorities agreed to promote a work agenda that will begin with a diploma in Foreign Trade.

“This agreement contributes to a better design and effectiveness of the country's commercial and productive development policy, which is facing a promising outlook for economic recovery due to the dynamism and jobs generated by sectors such as local manufacturing, free trade zones, trade. , among others, which in turn face great challenges ”, stated Bisonó.

He added that the agreement strengthens the role of the Ministry, through the Vice Ministry of Foreign Trade, as an advisor to the industrial and commercial sectors, and will promote the necessary mechanisms to identify opportunities to take advantage of the benefits of the trade agreements signed by the Dominican Republic, among other objectives.

In this regard, the alliance includes programs on the benefits and opportunities of the different trade agreements mainly on issues such as market access, tariff and non-tariff barriers, legal aspects, among others.

The rector Sánchez Maríñez affirmed that “this agreement is a new link in the long-term relationship that we have been building with the MICM, in order to generate synergies with the actions of both institutions for the benefit of the country and reaffirms INTEC's vocation to be partner of the public sector and the national productive sector in the search for innovative solutions that contribute to the sustainable development of the country ”.

He indicated that MICM and INTEC have collaborated in the areas of international trade, development of a quality system, support for MSMEs and monitoring of public policies towards said business sector and study and monitoring of logistics and cargo transportation activities.

Vice Minister Arbaje highlighted that the initiatives to be developed by the MICM and the ODCI of INTEC contemplate strengthening public sector institutions with specific commitments in the country's trade agreements.

Strategic collaboration

The ODCI constitutes a space for collaboration between the public sector, the private sector and the academy that, through training programs and research, supports a better insertion of the Dominican Republic in international trade and of which the MICM is a founding member. .

As part of the agreement, analyzes will be carried out of the commercial positioning of the Dominican Republic in the international context and of the market opportunities niches for the national productive sector, depending on the evolution of the world economy. 

Present at the signing ceremony, held at the MICM headquarters, were Jorge Morales, MICM vice minister of MYPIMES; Daniel Liranzo, executive director of the National Council of Free Export Zones (CNZFE); Vladimir Pimentel, PRO-DOMINICANA advisor; José Manuel Torres, Executive Vice President of the Dominican Association of Free Zones (ADOZONA) and Fátima González, manager of the Dominican Association of Exporters (ADOEXPO).

The teams of both institutions agreed to develop a joint effort and exchange relevant commercial information to achieve the objectives.
