INTEC and the US Embassy present the first Prize for Journalistic Innovation


SANTO DOMINGO- The Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) and the Embassy of the United States in the Dominican Republic announced the winners of the first edition of the Prize for Journalistic Innovation during an event held at the Digital Culture Center of the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (INDOTEL).

Ashley Presinal y Nasha Cruz, journalists from Listín Diario, were selected as winners in the category Investigative Digital Journalism for the series of publications “Dominican visas in Haiti: 3,700 million of pure discretion” y “Passport renewals abroad: A mine of dollars”. Presinal and Cruz recounted the lucrative business that exists in Dominican consulates located in Haiti and in Dominican diplomatic offices abroad that offer consular services.

Meanwhile, the prize Innovative Media he received it Accent, due to its growth and expansion through the most far-reaching digital media and its adaptability to each platform.

The winners of the Digital Research Award category received a metallic prize of 150 pesos, as well as a statuette. Ashley Presinal has a degree in Social Communication and Digital Media from INTEC, editor at the Listín Diario Digital Table; while Nasha Cruz, she is still studying Social Communication at the same university and works as a writer.

The Acento newspaper will receive a statuette and a full master's scholarship at INTEC for one of the media's collaborators as a prize.

The jury was made up of Roberto Hernández, journalist and professor at the University of Southern California; Charo Henríquez, head of newsroom development and support at The New York Times; Emmanuel Martínez, data reporter on The Washington Post's investigative team; Florencia Coehlo, columnist for the newspaper La Nación and Mariana Santos, founder of the Chicas Poderosas platform.

During the awards category Investigative Audiovisual Journalism was declared deserted.

In the act, the Chargé d'Affaires of the United States Embassy in the country, robertthomas, assured that the Embassy of the United States in Santo Domingo is a firm ally of a free, independent and empowered press. “The work that journalists do is very important and we do everything we can to support it. We have sponsored training programs for hundreds of journalists right here in the Dominican Republic. We have sent dozens of Dominican journalists to share experiences with their American colleagues and learn from each other.”

Likewise, Alliet Ortega, Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance at INTEC, stated that INTEC and the United States Embassy are filled with pride and satisfaction to present the Journalistic Innovation Award in order to rescue and reward responsible and truthful journalism in the country.

"This award recognizes journalists and media outlets that are committed to better journalism, publish on a multiplatform, take care of content and respond to innovation, excellence, social commitment, research, inclusion, sustainable development, critical thinking, the good use of the different digital platforms and the quality of the content”, he said.

Meanwhile, Dean of the Area of ​​Social Sciences and Humanities of INTEC, Dalul Ordehi, indicated that INTEC, in line with its values ​​of excellence, ethics, plurality, seeks from its work to promote and ensure a communication exercise attached to these, through the training of both new communicators with the Social Communication career and Digital Media, as well as practicing journalists and communicators who have participated in the International Diploma in Investigative Journalism carried out in conjunction with the Embassy of the United States in the Dominican Republic.

Also journalist y teacher Rosa Alcántara He specified that with the celebration of the first version of the Prize for Journalistic Innovation "a cycle of various actions developed through the career in Social Communication and Digital Media of INTEC is closed, which I coordinated since its opening, in August 2017. Actions, many of which have had the support of the Embassy of the United States in Santo Domingo and that have left their marks and fruits, which fill us with great satisfaction”.

About the prize

El Journalistic Innovation Award has the objective of promoting innovative, responsible journalism supported by in-depth investigation of the facts. It is organized through the career of Social Communication and Digital Media of INTEC, from the Area of ​​Social Sciences and Humanities, in alliance with the Embassy of the United States in the Dominican Republic and with the support of INDOTEL.

In this first edition of the competition, a total of 35 works of 51 journalists y six media. The proposals were published from November 2020 to October 20, 2022 on various digital platforms, social media spaces, television and radio, which were received through an online registration form.
