Second round of the Diploma in Building Evaluation begins


Santo Domingo. - The Network of Dominican Structural Evaluators (REED) began the second round of the Diploma in Building Evaluation, in which they will train more than 50 professionals from the Engineering Area belonging to the Nucleus of Civil Engineers, residents of Greater Santo Domingo.

The program of activities began at the beginning of March and the objective is to provide knowledge, analysis and specific skills in addressing the pre- and post-earthquake building evaluation processes. It is nine weeks long, which includes eight face-to-face classes every Saturday, and a ninth practical exam.

The opening of the Diploma course financed by the European Union took place at the facilities of the Dominican College of Engineers, Architects and Surveyors (CODIA). The training is carried out through the Project for Strengthening Disaster Risk Management in the Dominican Republic (Progeri-RD), the National Office for Seismic Assessment and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings (Onesvie), the CODIA, the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), through its Environmental Management Center (CEGA), and the executive direction of the Civil Defense.

Participants will also be trained in the implementation and use of the electronic tool for the seismic vulnerability assessment methodology “risk recognition, evaluation and estimation program (Prever).”

alliet ortega, vice-rector of Administration and Finance of INTEC, defined the completion of the diploma as a “country issue where all sectors of society must be involved.” She stressed that its implementation must be institutionalized to know how to respond to a certain seismic situation and said that she hopes that the number of trained people will exceed 150 to have a greater scope in responses.

When inaugurating the diploma work session, the CEO of Onesvie, Leonardo Reyes Madera, He thanked CODIA, INTEC, the European Union and the Civil Defense, for joining the initiative, and expressed that its purpose is that in every corner of the country there are professionals who are capable of evaluating buildings before, during and after an earthquake occurs. , infrastructure and vital lines. He said that action will make a difference.

He stated that those trained on this occasion will join the 47 professionals certified as evaluators from last year, and noted that by 2024 they intend to train more than 150.

He stressed that the Diploma will be carried out in all CODIA delegations and said that he hopes that it will be the consolidation of the project and that in the future it will be taken as a country commitment to take it to continuing education through INTEC.

Juan Villar González, president of CODIA, stated that the training is developed under an agreement with Onesvie and the other institutions involved, emphasizing that “it seeks to strengthen the capabilities of the members in the seismic evaluation of buildings.”

Meanwhile, Juan Salas, president of the National Emergency Commission (CNE) and executive director of the Civil Defense (DC), thanked the participation and said that with the diploma a new era of resilience in terms of infrastructure begins and called for taking advantage of the effort deployed to carry out the training.

Yanelba Abreu He urged the participating professionals to assume the commitment to the country and to be a critical mass to work on the evaluation of buildings and infrastructure. In turn, it required being available to respond to the call in the event of an earthquake.

In the same way Marine Star, president of the Nucleus of Civil Engineers, motivated the participation of each of the participants, predicted success and stated that the diploma course will be replicated in each of the CODIA delegations at the national level.
