SANTO DOMINGO- The Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), with the sponsorship of the United States Embassy in the Dominican Republic, gave the workshop “Tools for telling impactful and innovative stories in audiovisual production”, aimed at journalists from written, digital, multimedia and audiovisual media from all over the world. the country.

The training, as part of the preparatory activities for the Journalistic Innovation Award, was led by audiovisual journalist Almudena Toral, who shared examples of narrative, visual and auditory structures for innovative multimedia investigations. Almudena is a video, film and television producer at Propública and worked at Univisión and The New York Times.

During the workshop, the graduates of the Social Communication and Digital Media degree from INTEC, Ashley Presinal and Nasha Cruz, presented their investigative report, which was the winner of the first version of the Journalistic Innovation Award in the innovative digital journalism category. titled “Dominican visas in Haiti: 3,700 billion of pure discretion.” It was published in the newspaper Listín Diario, the medium for which they work.

Rubí Morillo, also an INTEC graduate, collaborated on the audiovisual content of the journalistic work.

For her part, Dalul Ordehi, dean of the Area of ​​Social Sciences and Humanities, urged the social communication professionals who participated in the workshop to make the most of the training offer and highlighted the experience of Toral, who has been recognized in the area of audiovisual journalism.

“The commitment to practicing journalism that is ethical, responsible, truthful, and especially that contributes to society with information that is of high impact has characterized this training that has sought from its first delivery to strengthen the practice of journalism for those who already have a position in the media and in the future journalists who have passed through our classrooms,” said Ordehi.

Present during the workshop were Rosa Alcántara, INTEC teacher and coordinator of the workshops and the Journalistic Innovation Award; by the United States Embassy in Santo Domingo, attended by its spokesperson Gabriel Hurst and the Press and Media coordinator, Paola Marte.

 Alcántara and Hurst presented certificates of participation to more than 50 journalists who attended the workshop, held in the conference room of the Social Security Observatory (OSES) of INTEC.

Olbis Morrobel, producer of AN7, expressed that the workshop was extremely enriching. “During the training, we acquired new and valuable tools that will undoubtedly strengthen our skills in the practice of journalism updated to the challenges of new times. These tools will not only enhance the quality of our audiovisual proposals, but will also allow us to use new ways of presenting reports and investigations that are relevant and attractive to the audience in this constantly evolving context.”

Adding to her comments was Madalyn Lorenzo, an INTEC graduate who works as a journalist for the Ombudsman, who said that the workshop served as “a wake-up call to find different perspectives for the production of our products, make them stand out and make them reach to more users.”

“I thought it was a very good experience and opportunity for journalists to strengthen the art of telling stories in a less traditional way. I liked that it was theoretical-practical and that we had the opportunity to share knowledge with colleagues from other media and students. Almudena's presentation was quite clear and enriching,” was the comment of Rubí Morillo, who also participated in the workshop.

Regarding the teacher, journalist Presinal valued the recommendations and tools presented. “Having the journalist Almudena Toral there with us, guiding us, educating us and advising us was a very valuable experience. “I feel like we all took something away from that workshop and that something will improve the quality of the work that we present, that we do, that we produce,” she said.

In addition to that workshop, INTEC organized two other workshops with The New York Times journalist, Charo Henríquez, and digital journalist and professor at the University of California, Robert Hernández.

The workshops were held with the purpose of providing tools to journalists to present their innovative research work in the audiovisual category for the Journalistic Innovation Award, to be held this year. In 2022, that category was deserted, which is why INTEC encourages journalists from different media outlets to apply for their audiovisual work.
