The 49% young people of foreign origin are permanent employees


The 48.97% of the immigrant population between 10 and 29 years in the Dominican Republic is employed in a fixed manner, according to the study on migration and youth conducted by the Socio Demographic Studies Program UNFPA- INTEC.

This range refers to the sum of the young Haitian immigrant population, the immigrant population of Haiti, the population of immigrants from other countries and descendants of immigrants from other countries. 

The research, carried out by the economist Luis Vargas, analyzes the sociodemographic, educational and family characteristics of immigrant 348,465 and descendants of immigrants between 10 and 29 years in the Dominican Republic, as well as the forms of insertion of this population in the labor market, from the data of the First National Survey of Immigrants in the Dominican Republic (ENI-2012).

It also establishes that the 38.68% of the immigrant population is employed on an occasional or temporary basis, and a low proportion of it (8.02%) is used for adjustment.

According to the research, "Haitian immigrants and immigrants from other countries and descendants of immigrants from Haiti, survive in very precarious conditions and life circumstances."

The average monthly income of immigrants and descendants of young immigrants is RD $ 8,034, a sum equivalent to 33% of the cost of the basic consumer basket nationwide.

According to the conclusions of the study, immigration to the Dominican Republic confirms simultaneous processes in the increase of salaried labor, mainly in the productive sectors of agriculture and construction, and the continuity of the masculinization of migration, especially among Haitian immigrants.

The study, entitled "Characteristics and comparative analysis between young immigrants and descendants of immigrants according to the First National Survey of Immigrants in the Dominican Republic (ENI-2012)", explores other aspects such as documentation, what these populations did before coming to the country and analyzes the data with a gender focus, making visible the conditions of immigrant young women with respect to that of young immigrant men.

It recommends the formulation of a policy and strategy to improve the level and quality of life and participation of young immigrants and their descendants, in accordance with the defense of human and migratory rights. Also the creation of a Dominican youth observatory to monitor the processes and trends of youth, in the national, Dominican-Haitian and international context.

UNFPA has sponsored a series of complementary studies of the ENI 2012, to analyze the survey database, so that they allow decision makers and decision makers to have a clearer picture of the situation of the population of origin abroad in the Dominican Republic.

Researcher Carlos Gratereaux as guest commentator of the event, stated that according to the study "The Contribution of Immigrant Workers to Economic Activity in the Dominican Republic", sponsored by UNFPA and the European Union, the economic contribution of workers of foreign origin to the Dominican economy in 2012 was RD $ 161,560.88 million pesos, equivalent to 7.5% of the added value of the economy.
