De Ramón describes as "imperative" to define the role of the State from a philosophy of economics

Santo Domingo. The Dominican economy has grown steadily in recent years with low inflation and macroeconomic stability, but when will the country make the leap to leave behind poverty and lack of education and health? These and other topics are addressed by the economist José Luis De Ramón in his book "The Challenges of the Dominican Republic: Global Economic Crisis, Lessons from Latin America and Determinants of Development", presented on Wednesday April 11, in the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo, INTEC.

The work includes the participation of the economist in three lectures of the "BHD Chair" carried out by the Business Area of INTEC with the support and sponsorship of Banco BHD. It includes both research and lectures to bring students and stakeholders to current issues treated by national and international experts, as a way to contribute to the development of critical thinking and knowledge generation.

In the book, presented by the economist Luis Reyes, De Ramón analyzes the global economic crisis and its repercussions and describes as "imperative" to define what is the role of the State from a philosophy of the economy.

The also member of the Board of Regents of INTEC expresses that although Latin America celebrates the good years it has had recently, with GDP growth and decrease in the number of poor people, not everything is rosy. "We face very important challenges such as the weakness of institutions, the lower growth in productivity, the poor distribution of income and generalized crime and violence".

"The Dominican Republic is very poorly positioned. We occupy in 2012, the 110 position of 142 having dropped 15 positions in two years. Where we are worse is in control of corruption and lack of electrical power "said De Ramón before an audience made up of businessmen, economists, executives and part of the academic community of INTEC.

The publication points out some specific measures to improve institutions, infrastructure (mainly in the electricity sector), macroeconomic prices, public debt, taxes and the use of public funds.

The launching of "The Challenges of the Dominican Republic" took place in the Julio Ravelo Room in La Fuente and was headed by Ana María Ramos, President of the Board of Regents of INTEC, the Rector, Rolando M. Guzmán and the Dean of the Business Area, Diómedes Christopher.
