They present the country's first book on the management of hydrocephalus


Santo Domingo. Hydrocephalus is one of the most common congenital defects, the most frequent cause of neurological surgery in children and a pathology with profound family, socioeconomic and ethical implications.

El Instituto Tecnológico de Santo DomingoINTEC, circulates this Wednesday 15 of August at 6: 00 pm in the Ravelo Room of INTEC, the book Handling of children's hydrocephalus: hopes and disappointments of Dr. Sonia Fermín Víctor. She is the first neurosurgeon woman in the country, who contributes with this publication the first Dominican monograph of reference on this subject, whose definition and causes are still under debate. The book includes in its 15 chapters the theories and medical research of the last 40 years on infant hydrocephalus, its treatments and complications.

Dr. Fermín Víctor has vast experience in pediatric neurosurgery. He graduated Medicine in 1967 from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) and completed his training at the Dr. Salvador B. Gautier Hospital and the Lahey Clinic Foundation (Boston), the Radcliffe Infirmary (Oxford) and the London Hospital (London) . He returned to the country in 1974 and for thirty-three years –until last year–, he was head of the Neurosurgery Service of the Dr. Robert Reid Cabral Children's Clinic (1978-2011).

She has been an advisor to the INTEC Medical Student Research Program (Bio-INTEC) and founder and president of the Support Board for research and treatment of children with Central Nervous System disease (1995-2012). She was also president of the Dominican Society of Neurology and Neurosurgery (1984 and 1985) and of the Association of Neurological Surgeons of the Caribbean and Central America (2003-2005), entities of which she is still a member in addition to the American College of Surgeons and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. 
Fermín Víctor has received numerous awards as Master of Neurosurgery (2002), Contribution to Neurosurgery of the Caribbean (2003 and 2009) and Medal of Merit for Women (2004) of the Dominican Government. She is the author of the textbook for medical students entitled Neurological examination: her clinical interpretation (2002).
