Women lead the sixty-eighth INTEC graduation


El Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) held its sixty-sixth graduation ceremony, in which 769 new professionals received their undergraduate and graduate degrees; of the total, 459 are women

SANTO DOMINGO. - The Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) awarded degrees to 769 new undergraduate and graduate professionals during its sixty-eighth graduation ceremony, among them, the first doctor in Environmental Sciences and the first graduate in Biochemistry.  

At the graduation ceremony, held on Saturday, April 20 at the Sansoucí Convention Center, women led the number of graduates with 59.69% of the total, compared to the 40.31% represented by men. Women constitute 81.67% of the graduates in the Health Sciences Area; 62% of the Basic and Environmental Sciences Area; 57.01% from the Economics and Business Area, and 28.11% from the Engineering Area.

Yvelisse Antonia Pérez, coordinator of Solid Waste of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, is the first graduate of the Doctorate in Environmental Sciences, and her doctoral thesis was based on a proposal for the treatment of wastewater produced in the home by constructed wetland environment. Meanwhile, María Alejandra Peña Ramírez is the first graduate of the degree in Biochemistry with maximum honors, summa cum laude.

The rector of the university, Julio Sánchez Maríñez, when addressing the graduates, highlighted that “there is no university better aligned with the real needs of human capital for the competitive and sustainable development of our country than INTEC.”

Sánchez Maríñez explained that “28% of our (degree) graduates are in the Engineering Area, while in the Dominican higher education system only less than 15% do so; Likewise, 10% of our graduates do so in the area of ​​science and mathematics, while in the higher education system as a whole less than 1% do so. In other words, we contribute to the training of professionals necessary for the country in all areas,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Juana Barceló, president of Barrick Pueblo Viejo, guest speaker at the graduation, urged the graduates to reflect on the meaning of leadership and commitment in the context of the constantly changing world.

“As future leaders, it is essential to understand the impact your actions will have on the world we live in. Today, more than ever, we face complex challenges that require, in addition to solid leadership, an unwavering commitment to the common good,” she emphasized.

He said that to contribute to making the country better, graduates must embrace responsible leadership and assume commitment as fundamental pillars of the path to success. “And being a leader is not about occupying a position of authority, but about inspiring others to reach their maximum potential,” said Barceló.

Adrianny Patricia Rodríguez Reyes, graduate of the bachelor's degree in Biotechnology, with the highest average for graduation, gave the acceptance speech on behalf of the class.

During his speech, he urged his colleagues not to allow momentary influences to divert them from what they really believe and value. “Let us ensure that our decisions are aimed at building a more just, equitable and sustainable future. May our decision-making always be based on responsibility and empathy, and may we continue to be the generation of environmental awareness, diversity, inclusion, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit.”

The young woman from Santiago indicated that thanks to the training, talent and skills acquired at INTEC, graduates have not only the opportunity, but also the responsibility to face the challenges facing society. “This is the moment in which we must commit to finding solutions to the problems that surround us, taking into account that in every action we take we are influencing and being influenced.”

The oath of graduates was pronounced by Génesis Silvestre Escolático, a graduate of the degree in Social Sciences oriented to Secondary Education, who studied the degree through the Teachers of Excellence program, developed by the National Institute for Training and Training of Teachers (INAFOCAM). .

Statistics

Of the 769 graduates, 224 concluded their academic programs with honors, of that total, 111 are Summa Cum Laude; 81 Magna Cum Laude and 32 graduated Cum Laude. Likewise, 16 of them studied at INTEC thanks to the INTEC scholarship program with Outstanding Students (PIES), a pioneering initiative of the university that grants study scholarships for excellent students. Of the PIES graduates, 15 graduate with academic honors: eleven (11) Summa Cum Laude and four (4) Magna Cum Laude.

Of the total number of graduates, 28.74% correspond to the Area of ​​Economics and Business; 24.06% to the Engineering Area; 23.41% to the Health Sciences Area; 17.30% to the Area of ​​Social Sciences and Humanities; and 6.50% to the Area of ​​Basic and Environmental Sciences. Likewise, 60.60% were graduates and 39.40% were graduates.
