Santiago becomes an Intelligent City

SANTIAGO. The Council for Strategic Development of Santiago (CDES) and the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (INTEC) presented "Santiago, Smart City", an initiative that seeks the generation of public-private partnerships for the implementation of innovative and sustainable solutions to problems identified in the city, which will make Santiago one of the first smart cities in the country.

The initiative is part of the project "Laboratory of Innovation and Territorial Intelligence for Dominican Cities", which will be implemented simultaneously in Santiago and Santo Domingo, under the auspices of the Inter-American Development Bank and the Multilateral Investment Fund (IDB-MIF).

Among its expected results, is the strengthening of the city councils of both cities in the collection, analysis and implementation of open and statistical information to generate city solutions; the strengthening of public-private partnerships and with international organizations; the acceleration of entrepreneurial businesses that propose answers to city problems, in terms of mobility, communication and information technologies (ICT), innovation, urbanism, culture; and the establishment of a replicable model for the transformation of smart cities in other cities of the Dominican Republic.

Prior to the presentation event, an IDEATHÓN was held where specialists and technicians from the urban, cultural, academic and innovation areas made proposals and brainstormed how to approach the problems of the city with the use of open data and big data.

After the IDEATHON, the rector and vice-rector of Investigation and Liaison of INTEC, Rolando M. Guzmán and Víctor Gómez-Valenzuela, respectively, together with Juan Carlos Ortiz and Reynaldo Peguero, president and director of the CDES, met with the mayor Abel Martínez, to formally present the project, exploring opportunities for collaboration.

Finally, the event to present the project took place in the Business Building, where authorities from INTEC and the CDES shared the scoops about the project and the expected impact on the public, business and community sectors.
