European Union funds project in favor of sexual and reproductive rights in the DR


Santo Domingo.- After winning a world contest, Profamilia will execute in the country the project "Promoting the exercise of your sexual rights and reproductive rights." The project is financed by the European Union (EU) for an amount of 903 thousand 937 euros; the counterpart that Profamilia will assume is 226 thousand 043 euros. The execution time is three years.

They will work together with Profamilia, as partners, the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), through the Center for Gender Studies; the Women's Support Center (NAM) of Santiago and the Dominican Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (SDOG).

The information was released during an event at the Profamilia headquarters, with the presence of Ambassador Irene Horejs, head of the EU Delegation in the country, and representatives of the project's partner institutions. It will be coordinated by the lawyer María Jesús Pola.

The main objective of "Promoting the exercise of sexual rights and reproductive rights in the Dominican Republic" is to achieve greater validity of sexual and reproductive rights (DS / DR) in the population; empower adolescent and young women, as well as sensitize social, political and political actors and actresses on the subject.

After the presentation of the project, Profamilia signed contracts with INTEC, the NAM and the Dominican Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics, institutions that were represented by the rector of INTEC, Dr. Miguel Escala; the director of the Núcleo de Apoyo a la Mujer (NAM), Dr. Manuela Vargas and Dr. Milcíades Albert, representing the president of the SDGO, Dr. Ruddy Guerrero.

What are sexual and reproductive rights?

Sexual and reproductive rights (DS / DR) are human rights that have to do with sexuality and reproduction of the human being and their guarantee allows men and women (adolescents, youth and adults) to enjoy a sexual life and healthy reproductive.

Among the main international documents that support the recognition of these rights are:

  • The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948.
  • The Tehran Human Rights Proclamation 1968.
  • The Declaration of Alma Ata on Primary Care, 1978.
  • The Declarations of the Population Conferences of Rome 1954, Belgrade 1965, Bucharest 1974, Mexico 1984 and particularly the Cairo 1994 Conference.

Sexual and reproductive rights have been recognized and promoted by international frameworks to which the Dominican Republic is a party, such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Inter-American Convention to prevent , punish and eradicate violence against women and the Statute of the International Criminal Court. Likewise, they have been part of the World Conference on Human Rights held in 1993 within the framework of the United Nations in Vienna (Austria); the International Conference on Population and Development, held in 1994 in Cairo (Egypt), and the World Conference on Women held in 1995 in Beijing (China).
