UNFPA and INTEC are committed to promoting the sustained development of the country


Santo Domingo. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) committed today to investigate relevant sociodemographic issues, among which they cited employment, youth, gender, education, health, aging, migration, climate change and land use planning.

Both entities expressed their interest in collaborating jointly by encouraging and facilitating educational and research actions, aimed at promoting the continuous improvement of the quality of life of society and the sustained development of the country.

Valerie Julliand, Coordinator of the United Nations System, Sonia Vázquez, Deputy Representative of the United Nations Population Fund, and Rolando Guzmán, Rector of INTEC, after signing a cooperation agreement to promote research, highlighted the importance of joining forces to contribute to better understand the magnitude of national problems, an essential step to achieve adequate solutions.

The signing of the agreement is part of the commemorative actions of World Statistics Day, which is celebrated tomorrow, October 20, a date that finds the Dominican Republic with a population of 9 million 445 thousand 281 people, 74% of which already resides in urban areas. The country's population density is 208 people per square kilometer.

One of the demographic characteristics of the country is the concentration of the population in a few provinces. 71% of Dominican women and men reside in 10 provinces while the 10 least populated only concentrate 7%. More than half of the population (52%) resides in the provinces of Santo Domingo, Santiago, San Cristóbal and the National District.

The agreement signed between UNFPA and INTEC also aims to create a reference space for those seeking precise statistical information on sociodemographic issues. It starts from the criterion that statistical information is essential for planning.
