Sur Futuro and INTEC certify 25 new community leaders from Samaná to face climate change

Second edition of the Diploma in Climate Change with a focus on Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA) in Samaná

Samana. The Future South Foundation and Environmental Management Center (CEGA) of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) concluded the diploma course on Climate Change with a focus on Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EBA).

This initiative, part of the project “Rehabilitation of marine habitats and their livelihoods in the province of Samaná for adaptation to climate change”, seeks to strengthen the capacities of the Samaná community to face the challenges of climate change.

Through this diploma course, aimed at teachers and community leaders, 25 people, including 18 women, were trained in strategies to adapt to the effects of climate change. The focus on Ecosystem-Based Adaptation seeks to take advantage of nature to mitigate the impacts of climate change, a topic that has been a central focus of this training.

During the closing ceremony, held in the Samaná governorate, the executive director of Sur Futuro, Elena Del Conte, highlighted the importance of this diploma as a first step towards a more sustainable and resilient future. “We have planted the seeds of change and now it is up to us to cultivate them and make them grow,” she said.

Diana Corrales, coordinator of CEGA INTEC, said that “ecosystem-based adaptation is key to protecting and restoring our natural environments. You have the power to implement practices that not only benefit your communities, but also inspire others to join in this important mission.”

Also present at the certificate presentation ceremony were Nestor Antonio Kelly, Comptroller of the Samaná Municipality; Dionelis Garabito, Provincial Coordinator of the Environment; Héctor Antonio Luciano Morris, Provincial Director of the Dominican Agrarian Institute (IAD); Dennis Gonzales, Environmental Education Officer of the Environment Department; and Tomasa Eustaquio, Deputy Director of Education District 14-04, as well as Ysidro Boné, Restoration Officer of the Center for Conservation and Eco-Development of Samaná Bay and its Environment (CEBSE).
