They pay homage to the career of the narrator, essayist and literary critic José Alcántara Almánzar


The narrator, essayist, literary critic and university professor José Alcántara Almánzar received a tribute from the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) for his intellectual career, during the sixteenth celebration of “A day with an author and his work”.

Each year the university recognizes the life and career of an outstanding Dominican whose intellectual, artistic, scientific and technological work is considered an example for youth.

The Julio Ravelo room in La Fuente, in the INTEC library, served as a stage for high school students to carry out an artistic day, in which the writer was the special guest. The students made several theatrical, graphic and audiovisual manifestations, inspired by the life and work of the author.

In the 2009, Alcántara Almánzar won the National Prize for Literature, unanimously selected by a jury composed of the Minister of Culture, José Rafael Lantigua and the rectors of the UASD, PUCMM, UNPHU, UCE, Catholic University Santo Domingo, INTEC and the director of the Corripio Foundation, José Luis Corripio.

Among his works are: Anthology of the "Dominican Literature" in 1972 and "The mask of seduction", with which he won the annual Primo of stories, in 1983.

"One day with an author and his work" is organized by the Social Sciences and Humanities Department of INTEC and to date has recognized personalities such as: Virgilio Díaz Grullón (1995), Elsa Núñez (1996) , Gustavo Tavares (1997), Eugenio de Jesus Marcano (1998), Rafael Solano (1999), Mary Perez de Marranzini (2000), Jorge Cela (2001), María Ugarte (2002), Enrique Armenteros (2003), Mariano Lebrón S . (2004), Freddy Ginebra (2005), Iván García (2006), Alberto Morales (2007), Marcio Veloz M. (2008) and Soucy de Pellerano (2009).

This year the activity involved all the academic instances of the university and the students of the Santa Teresita, Babeque Secundaria, Triumphare and Lux ​​Mundi schools.

José Alcántara Almánzar

Educator, sociologist and Dominican writer (Santo Domingo, 2 of May of 1946). He began his teaching career at the age of twenty, serving as a professor of educational centers as important as the Chevalier Institute (1966), Loyola College (1969-1973), the Dominican-American Cultural Institute (1972-1975), the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (1973), the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University (1974-1984) and the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (1981-2001). Between 1987 and 1988, thanks to a program sponsored by the Fulbright Foundation, he was a resident professor at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama (USA).

He has been president of the Dominican Association of Sociologists (1977-1979), jury of the House of the Americas Short Story Award 2003, Havana (Cuba), and advisor to the Banco Popular, the Dominican Cultural Foundation, the García Arévalo Foundation and the Corripio Foundation, Inc.

His extensive work as a narrator, essayist and literary critic has earned him notable awards and accolades, such as the Annual Short Story Award granted by the Ministry of Education and Culture, the J. Arturo Pellerano Alfau Journalism Excellence Award (1996), and the Golden Caonabo (1998).

Several of his stories appear in national and foreign anthologies, having been translated into English, German and Italian.

From 1996 he works as director of the Cultural Department of the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic. He is married to Ida Hernández Caamaño from 1971, and he is the father of three children: Ernesto, Yelida and César Alcántara Hernández.
