Science and Society Journal celebrates 50 years of academic excellence, research and social commitment
At a celebratory event, Miguel Heredia Bonetti, the magazine's first editor, recalled its origins and praised the publication's contributions over five decades of in-depth analysis.
SANTO DOMINGO. - He Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) celebrated the 50th anniversary of its emblematic magazine Science and Society, an academic publication that for five decades has contributed to the development of scientific and social thought in the country and the region.
The commemorative event, which was attended by academic authorities, researchers, teachers, collaborators and personalities linked to the history of the journal, began with the words of the rector of INTEC, Arturo Del Villar, who highlighted the historical significance of maintaining an active and current academic publication for half a century.
“For five decades Science and Society "It has been a beacon of knowledge, a pluralistic and rigorous space where academia connects with the realities and challenges of our society," said Del Villar.
He also acknowledged the work of the founders and the team responsible for maintaining the editorial and scientific quality of the publication over the years.
To evoke the genesis of Science and Society
One of the most moving moments of the day was the participation of Miguel Heredia Bonetti, who recalled the beginnings of INTEC and the birth of the magazine within a complex political and social context for the country. Heredia emphasized that Science and Society It emerged with the vision of combining academic excellence with social sensitivity and scientific dissemination.
“We believed and continue to believe that academic excellence should be an instrument for the transformation of society,” he stated.
The founder also recalled how the magazine was born as an extension of the research and dissemination efforts promoted by INTEC from its early years, accompanied even by television programs and spaces for academic debate that sought to bring scientific knowledge closer to the public.
Science and Society It was founded in 1975, three years after INTEC, when a group of professionals and university students reflected on how to contribute, from academia, to solving society's problems, specifically overcoming poverty. "That's why it wasn't mere coincidence that the first issue of the magazine focused on inflation," he recalled.
During the event, a commemorative video about the magazine was shown, and awards were presented to individuals who have significantly contributed to its growth and consolidation over the past five decades. Among those honored were Miguel Heredia Bonetti, Lucero Arboleda, José Mármol, Víctor Gómez-Valenzuela, Fari Rosario, Gali Monpue, and Jorge Ulloa.
Impact Science and Society It was such that, in 2017, with its digital transformation, 42 years after its founding, it led to the creation of four new academic journals "Science and Education", "Science and Health", "Science, Economy and Business", and "Science and Technology", which was joined in 2018 “Science, Environment and Climate”With these journals, the university has demonstrated its commitment to research, knowledge production, and social transformation through education and science. It is the only private institution in the country with this number of academic journals available in open access.
Research Director Carlos Sanlley closed the event by thanking the attendees and highlighting the international impact the magazine now has. “We have millions of people reading our magazines. That’s an incredible achievement,” he noted.
The event was attended by the president of the Board of Regents, Rosalina Perdomo; José Luis de Ramón, Distinguished Graduate in Economics and past president of the Board of Regents; the past rector of INTEC, Rolando Guzmán; the Academic Vice-Rector, Shajira Nazir; and the Vice-Rector of Research and Outreach, Rosario Aróstegui; the Coordinator of Publications, Manuel Madé, as well as other personalities linked to the journal and to scientific work.
