The Dominican Republic experienced a 6% growth in the ICT Development Index
The National Observatory of Communication Technologies of INTTEC indicated that the country's evolution in the ICT Development Index (IDI) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) was 75.0 points in 2023, 75.4 in 2024, 75.1 in 2025 and 79.3 in 2026
SANTO DOMINGO - The National Observatory of Information and Communication Technologies of the Dominican Republic (ONTIC-RD) of Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) reported that the Dominican Republic reached 79.3 points in the 2026 edition of the ICT Development Index (IDI) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which represented an increase of 6% compared to the previous year and placed the country above the world average of 79.0 points.
The Dominican Republic's National Office for Information and Communication Technologies (ONTIC-RD) indicated that the analysis was based on official scores published by the ITU. According to these results, the Dominican Republic ranked 100th out of the 159 economies evaluated and 14th out of the 25 Latin American and Caribbean economies included in the study. This represents an increase of 7 and 4 positions, respectively, compared to 2025.
The observatory indicated that the IDI is the ITU's main indicator for measuring countries' progress towards Universal and Meaningful Connectivity. The index comprises ten indicators related to access, adoption, coverage, infrastructure, and affordability of telecommunications services.
ONTIC-RD explained that the ITU does not publish official rankings since the adoption of the current methodology in 2023. For this reason, the global and regional positions presented in the report were calculated by ordering the official scores published by the organization.
The Observatory's analysis showed that the Dominican Republic's score increased from 75.1 points in 2025 to 79.3 points in 2026, representing a 6% growth. Furthermore, it indicated that the country's performance since the implementation of the current methodology was as follows: 75.0 points in 2023, 75.4 in 2024, 75.1 in 2025, and 79.3 in 2026.
The observatory reported that the Dominican Republic obtained 69.3 points in the Universal Connectivity component and 89.4 points in Meaningful Connectivity, indicators used by the ITU to evaluate access to and use of the Internet.
According to the ITU report, the 2026 edition of the IDI assessed 159 economies using the methodology approved by Member States in 2023, which allows for comparison of the results of the 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 editions.
The ITU noted that the results reflected increased internet access, network expansion, and improved affordability of services. The agency indicated that disparities still exist between regions and income levels, along with challenges in expanding connectivity.
ONTIC-RD added that the ITU also indicated that the index constitutes a partial measurement of digital development, as it does not incorporate indicators on digital skills, online safety and cybersecurity due to the limited availability of comparable international statistics.
