Rectors of INTEC, PUCMM, UNPHU, UNAPEC and UNIBE hold a meeting with the Minister of Higher Education

SANTO DOMINGO. The rectors of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University (UNPHU), Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), APEC University (UNAPEC) and the Ibero-American University (UNIBE) held a meeting with the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology , Franklin García Fermín, in which they shared on different topics related to higher education and their perspectives in the national and international context.

The activity, which took place at the APEC University, is the first of a series of meetings that the rectors of these academies propose to hold with the minister to exchange ideas about the higher education system and scientific, technological and innovation development in the country.

The meeting was attended by the rectors Miguel Fiallo, from UNPHU; Ramón Alfredo de la Cruz Baldera, from PUCMM; Franklyn Holguín Haché, from UNAPEC; Julio Sánchez Maríñez, from INTEC and Odile Camilo Vincent, academic vice-rector of UNIBE, on behalf of its rector, Julio Amado Castaños Guzmán.

Minister García Fermín thanked the rectors for their initiative and showed his willingness to give continuity to the regular meetings. Together with the rectors, they exchanged opinions on the five-year evaluation processes and monitoring of the continuous improvement of the universities, the opening to consultations in the regulatory exercise by the Ministry, the priority to be given to the quality assurance systems, the assessment of solidarity and cooperation between higher education institutions throughout the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and other issues of relevance to the higher education system.

The five universities represented by their rectors have developed a cooperative relationship based on the shared experience in the National Interuniversity Student Mobility Program (MOVENI), for which they signed an agreement in 2018. Since then, they have made progress in other common projects in the fields of academic research and services to society, highlighting among the latter their responses to support the confrontation of the health crisis caused by COVID-19, among others.
