Rector of INTEC receives Medal of Academic Merit from LACCEI
The Latin American and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions of Latin America and the Caribbean, LACCEI for its acronym in English (Latin American and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions), presented the Medal of Academic Merit 2010-2011 to the rector of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), Dr. Miguel J. Escala, for his outstanding role as promoter of Engineering teachings in the Caribbean.
The delivery took place at a ceremony held last August 4, within the framework of the ninth Annual Conference of LACCEI, in Medellin, Colombia. In it, Escala stressed that in the increase of productivity engineers are fundamental. "Not only good engineers, but transformers and committed to society. For that, students of the different disciplines of engineering must prepare. "
He insisted that engineers should be trained from primary education, with good foundations and intense work in science, engineering and mathematics. "The primary teacher who teaches science badly and punishes innovation is castrating a generation. It requires, then, a strong primary with emphasis on science and engineering, but also with lessons that contribute to the social sense and commitment to the transformations of society ", emphasized the professional throughout his talk, which was the first of the day.
Similarly stressed that in the countries of the region you need a greater number of engineers and said that the qualification of teaching in engineering generates productivity, which in turn contributes to competitiveness, leading to economic growth and prosperity that , really, it can be distributed among the population.
In the delivery of the Medal of Merit, Miguel Escala was accompanied by Carlos Cordero, dean of the Engineering Area, Tulio Rodríguez, coordinator of the 2 + 2 INTEC-PennState Program, Professor Mildred Sena, in charge of the Accreditation Project of the careers of the INTEC Engineering Area, and Alexander Núñez, INTEC Civil Engineering student, who gave a presentation within the program of the LACCEI 2011 Conference on Lean Construction in Civil Engineering, a philosophy of planning and administration of construction production, which seeks the elimination of activities that do not add value (losses), to add more efficient and environmentally friendly practices in construction processes.
Scale contributions
The LACCEI consortium pondered that since the year 2005 Escala has contributed to the development of national higher education with the creation of the Regional System of Accreditation in Engineering for the Greater Caribbean (GCREAS), as an agency for quality assurance of academic engineering programs in the region.
Other contributions are the support to the materialization of the project "Education to think" that in union with the Dominican Ministry of Education and the Teacher's College of the University of Columbia in New York, looks for that children of basic education of the Public School Fray Ramón Pané improve their skills in science, mathematics and Spanish language with classes that integrate environment and engineering and thus obtain a macro view of what they can achieve in the future.
Escala has been the driving force of a network of the best engineering education institutions in seven Caribbean countries, known as TEC CARIBE, and has sought alliances with prestigious engineering schools in the United States and Europe to strengthen the level of education in the future engineers in INTEC.
LACCEI is a non-profit organization made up of institutions from Latin America and the Caribbean specialized in academic programs in engineering and technology. Annually it awards this recognition to people who, from their role as directors, educators or members of academies of higher studies, play an important role in the growth and development of teaching.
The period of Escala as rector of INTEC culminates in the coming weeks.
