RD headquarters of the seventh Biennial Conference of the World Association for the Study of the African Diaspora (ASWAD)


SANTO DOMINGO. - From this Wednesday 30 of October to the 2 day of November Dominican Republic will host the seventh Biennial Conference of the World Association for the Study of the African Diaspora (ASWAD). The conference entitled "Transformative Visions: Confronting Change and Creating Opportunity in Africa and the African Diaspora" will have the participation of more than three hundred researchers and academics who will present the results of their explorations in the country.

The ASWAD, based in New York University and whose main institutional support is Rutgers, State University of New Jersey, is composed of scholars on issues related to afrodescendence around the world. ASWAD has as its main mission to promote knowledge about the African diaspora through the holding of international conferences, in which the members meet to exchange information, as well as academic publications.

The opening ceremony of the conference will be held at the Hotel Magna 365 / Meliá on Wednesday 30 October 2013 7: 00pm to 8: 00pm. Welcoming remarks by representatives of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), and ASWAD will serve as a prelude to the address of the guest of honor, the Dominican ambassador to Haiti Rubén Silié Valdez. During this Master Session a video message will also be presented for the speakers of the acclaimed Haitian-American writer and academic Edwidge Danticat. The Master Session will be followed by a cocktail in the hotel pool area.

In an exercise to promote the exchange of ideas and dialogue, ASWAD, INTEC, UASD and scholars of the subject in the DR, as well as activists of the afrodescendencia, also invite the panels that will be developed on Thursday 31 of October of 3: 00pm to 7: 00pm in the Manuel del Cabral Auditorium of the Pedro Mir Library, in the UASD.

The first panel, entitled "Afro-descendants in the Dominican Republic" and moderated by Dr. José Guerrero, will feature the participation of anthropologist Carlos Andújar; the meritísimo professor and sociologist Dagoberto Tejeda; the Afro researcher Dr. Celsa Albert; Afro-descendant and social researcher Darío Solano; the sociologist Roldán Mármol; the philosopher Pablo Mella; and the anthropologist Geo Ripley.

In the second panel, entitled "Construction of Citizenship and Right to Nationality in the Legal Context for Dominicans of Haitian Descent" and moderated by Dr. Desiree del Rosario Sosa, will participate Ana María Belique, social activist member of the Recognized Movement; Liliana Dolis, Social Activist, member of the Movement of Dominican-Haitian Women (MUDHA); Colette Lespinasse, journalist from the Refugee and Repatriated Support Group (GARR); Guy Alexander, Haitian sociologist and intellectual and former ambassador of Haiti in the Dominican Republic.

On Friday 1ero of November, from 7: 30pm to 9: 00pm, the great Contemporary Show will be held in Plaza España where the Guloyas of San Pedro de Macorís will participate, the Popular Dancing Theater Nereyda Rodríguez, Roldán Mármol and his Band with special guest , the singer-songwriter José Duluc and the queen of the fusion, Xiomara Fortuna and Sin Hora Band.

On November 2 Saturday, from the 5: 00pm, the cultural event will be held to close the conference in the Afro-descendant community Mata de Los Indios, in Villa Mella. Here the Conference will be closed to the rhythm of the Congos de Villa Mella, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. During this event the groups Enerolisa and their Salves and Sonia Cabra and the Scientists of Son will also be presented.

These activities are being coordinated by a local committee made up of INTEC, the UASD, Fundación Cultural Cofradía, Centro Bonó, and Acción Afro-Dominicana, with the support of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and the Municipalities of Santo Domingo Norte, San Pedro de Macoris and Nigua.
