Santo Domingo. - Center for Gender Studies of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (CEG-INTEC), developed the academic seminar “Coeducation: a space for reflection and analysis The symposium, which focused on critical thinking and the principles, approaches, and practices that underpin equitable education, emphasized the transformation of educational dynamics that perpetuate gender inequalities in school settings.
The seminar was aimed at the master's students of the fifth round of the Master's Degree in Gender and Equality Policies in Education, a program that is being developed in coordination with National Institute for Teacher Training and Education (INAFOCAM). During the day, the fundamental concepts of coeducation, the historical evolution of equality approaches in the educational field, and the identification of gender biases in teaching and learning processes were addressed.
The training took place in the Social Security Auditorium (OSES) of INTEC, aimed at students from Santo Domingo, and in the Father Guido Gildea Schoolfor students in San Juan. The seminar was taught by the teacher Nuria García Perales, University of Valladolid (Spain), a specialist in coeducation and educational theory, who offered an updated and comparative perspective on coeducational practices in various international contexts.
Her presentation provided a critical perspective on current educational challenges, as well as sharing experiences and strategies aimed at educational transformation with a gender focus. Based on this analysis, theoretical and practical tools were promoted to understand and challenge the structures that perpetuate unequal relationships in schools.
During the seminar, reflection was promoted on the key elements of a co-educational school, highlighting the importance of educational planning with an equality focus, the implementation of inclusive methodological strategies, and the active role of the various educational agents in building fairer and more equitable learning environments, including teachers, management teams, and the educational community.
As part of the strategies to promote co-education, the expert highlighted the importance of ensuring equal participation of students, both girls and boys, encouraging the rotation of leadership and caregiving roles within the student body, as well as constantly reviewing language to ensure that it is inclusive.
She also emphasized the need to educate girls and boys about privilege and responsibility, through dialogue aimed at raising awareness and working towards building egalitarian environments. Similarly, she stressed the importance of involving families in co-educational processes, so they can reach their full potential and understand that patriarchy also affects boys, promoting emotional repression, the pressure to provide, and other factors.
