INTEC Professor of Medicine recognized with the 2022 National Science Award
SANTO DOMINGO. - The doctor Manuel Colome, coordinator of the Master of Public Health and Epidemiology of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), was recognized with the 2022 National Science Award, In category Health Sciencesduring a ceremony held at the National Palace, which was headed by the Vice President Raquel Pena and the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Franklin Garcia Fermin.
Colomé was awarded along with 15 other Dominican scientists who have excelled in different fields of knowledge for the development and progress of the country, and whose recognition was approved by the Council for Higher Education, Science and Technology (CONESCyT), in a session ordinary, headed by García Fermín, in his capacity as president of that body.
Dr. Manuel Emilio Colomé Hidalgo received the Sergio Bencosme Ruiz award, in the Area of Health Sciences; Gustavo Rathe Medinacelli, was recognized with the Julio Moisés Álvarez prize, in the area of physical-chemical science, while Dr. Francisco Roberto Arias Milla, was awarded the André Vioebergh prize in the area of agri-food sciences. Likewise, Dr. Darwin Muñoz Núñez was awarded the Álvaro Nadal Pastor prize in the area of engineering and related fields.
Dr. Colomé is a graduate of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), he has a doctorate in Epidemiology and Public Health from the Rey Juan Carlos University. Likewise, he has completed master's degrees in Research in Health Sciences, and in Bioethics and in Microbiology and infectious diseases. The ASISA Chair of Humanitarian Medicine of the Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC), in Spain, recognized as the best research work in Humanitarian Medicine, Public Health and Epidemiology its study "Inequalities in Childhood Immunization Coverage in Latin America and the Caribbean: study ecological-analytical and temporal trend".
The act
When pronouncing the central words of the act, the Vice President of the Republic stated that this government effort has focused on improving the quality of scientific proposals and projects financed with resources from the national budget, allowing researchers to direct their work towards the solution of concrete problems of Dominican society.
"The Government of President Luis Abinader has allocated more than RD 1,200 million pesos to the development of more than 160 research projects that were approved to the different higher education institutions through the National Fund for Innovation and Scientific and Technological Development," he said. .
During the ceremony, held in the Las Cariátides Hall, García Fermín, in his capacity as president of CONESCyT, assured that by mandate of President Abinader, science has become one of the main banners of the institution he directs, focusing on strengthening the scientific community and the National Science and Innovation System.
“Today the MESCyT is celebrating, because we are recognizing the trajectory and contributions of great men and women who have dedicated their lives to research and innovation in the Dominican Republic. We also celebrate the legacy of others who are no longer with us, but they have left an indelible mark on national life," he said.
García Fermín highlighted that, for the first time in history, Social Sciences and Humanities scientists will have the opportunity to participate in the call from the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Innovation and Development (FONDOCYT), so that these two areas can receive funding for projects that contribute to the country's challenges.
Other recognized
Dr. Roberto Cassá received recognition for his career in the area of Social Sciences. Likewise, CONESCyT paid a posthumous tribute to eight Dominican intellectuals and scientists who died in the last two years.
Tirso Mejía Ricart (1936-2021) in the area of humanities; Marcio Veloz Maggiolo (1936-2021), in the area of social sciences, also in the area of social sciences, Carlos Dore Cabral (1942-2022), and Amado Reyes (1950-2022).
In addition, Norma Cabral Calcagno (died 2022), in the field in the area of agri-food and veterinary sciences; Franc Báez Evert, Carlos Esteban Deive, and Ivelisse Prats Ramírez de Pérez.
Together, the MESCyT organization created the prize in social sciences, in homage to the historian and writer Hugo Tolentino Dipp, as well as the prize for the humanities on behalf of the educator and university professor Jacobo Moquete.
National Science Award
The National Science Award is an award that is given annually, and its objective is to recognize the trajectory and scientific contributions of researchers in the areas of basic sciences, health, agri-food sciences, engineering sciences and a great award to the scientist of the nation.
