They present a study on women and policies of the municipal governments
SANTO DOMINGO. The city councils of the country fail to comply with the obligation to allocate 4% of their budget to Education, Health and Gender, and in cases where delivery is met, the expenditure is reduced to welfare activities and contributes to reproducing the roles of gender.
The statement is one of the main findings of the study "Gender in the budget of local governments: cases National District and San Juan de la Maguana", which was prepared by the Center for Gender Studies Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (CEGE-INTEC) y Oxfam
The results of the investigation show that six years after the 176-07 Law of the National District and municipalities was passed, progress on gender equality issues is very scarce.
Also, weaknesses were identified in the municipalities when establishing regulations, policies, plans and an agenda for the progressive inclusion of the gender approach in municipal actions and compliance with their commitments on equality.
The research is a first step to identify the role that local governments are playing with respect to gender and help improve it. Previous studies show the resistance to change and the limited interest in promoting gender equity and equality in the actions of the municipalities.
The study was presented at the local Dominican Federation of Municipalities (FEDOMU), and was headed by the director of CEG-INTEC, Lourdes Contreras and the representative of OXFAM Dominican Republic, Rosa Cañete Alonso.
