They present Diagnosis and Environmental Ordinances of the Municipality of Las Galeras-Samaná

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the USAID Program for Environmental Protection and the Las Galeras City Council released the environmental diagnosis of this municipality, as well as five environmental ordinances approved by the Council of Municipal Councilors of the Chamber capitulate of said City Council.

The five approved ordinances control and / or regulate the discharge of sewage into pipes and water sources, the disposal of non-hazardous solid waste, inadequate fishing methods and promotes the use of good practices in this area. They also regulate pollution by frequent burning of trees and sonic pollution.

The process of elaboration of the Environmental diagnosis and of the five environmental ordinances had the active participation of the Municipal Environmental Forum of Las Galeras, made up of Local Authorities, Civil Society and governmental entities of the municipality. These documents will contribute to a better municipal environmental management and use of the natural resources of Las Galeras. 

The Municipal Environmental Management Units (UGAM) are structures created by Law 64-00 on the Environment and Natural Resources which are located in the municipalities. The UGAMs have the responsibility of applying at the municipal level, the provisions of Law 64-00, the environmental standards that are elaborated by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and those approved by the Local Governments. Likewise, Law 176-07 of the District and the Municipalities ratify the creation of Municipal Environmental Units.

The presentation of the Diagnosis and Environmental Ordinances of the Municipality of Las Galeras, Samaná, was held last Wednesday, March 24, at the Church of God of Prophecy, and was attended by Rosa Otero, from the Directorate of Commerce and Environment of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, representing the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Jaime David Fernández Mirabal, the Director of the USAID Program for Environmental Protection, Engineer Indhira de Jesús, the USAID Program Manager for Environmental Protection, Doctor José Contreras, the Mayor of Las Galeras City Council, Rafael Bello, among other government and local personalities.

The Environmental Protection Program, under the auspices of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is executed by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (INTEC) and it seeks to facilitate compliance of the commitments assumed by the Dominican Republic when ratifying the Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA), providing technical assistance, training and equipment to national institutions, mainly the Secretary of State for the Environment.
