They present advances of the project Education to think
Santo Domingo.- The “Education to think” project presented the progress of two years of execution to the Minister of Education, Josefina Pimentel, who visited the facilities of the Fray Ramón Pané Public School, where the project is being developed, coordinated by the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), the ministry and the Teacher´s College of Columbia University in New York.
Pimentel consulted both project managers and students about the schedule, teacher training, curriculum and subjects. He commented that this structure allows students to take advantage of all levels of cognitive development and favors the integration of knowledge between the different subjects.
The project, in which 140 students from 5to and 6to participate in basic education, seeks for children to get a macro view of what they can achieve in the future while transmitting aspects of other cultures and getting their interest in the positive aspects what they offer. Similarly improve their skills in science, mathematics and Spanish language with classes that integrate environment and engineering.
Students will be followed up in each area of learning until they graduate from high school, when it is estimated that they can participate in the INTEC Program with Outstanding Students (PIES) to continue their higher education at INTEC.
Sarah Espaillat, director of the project, explained that one of the main objectives of this initiative is to get infants to change their attitude towards their education and towards the achievements they can obtain if they care about it. The project involves children from different schools in the 15-04 educational district, who take classes at the Fray Ramón Pané school.
Among the fruits achieved so far, we can mention that students who at first did not know or write their names, or use capital letters and who also wrote by fractioning into syllables and did not dominate structure a sentence, today they write poems, stories, essays, informative texts , expository and poetic, correctly.
The Teacher's College of Columbia University (New York) provides support in the development and improvement of thinking skills, both for students and teachers.
During the visit were present Migdalia Martínez, dean of the Social Sciences and Humanities Department of INTEC, Leonardo Valeirón, professor of the area, Miguel Escala, Víctor Sánchez, deputy minister of Planning of the MINERD, Sarah Espaillat, project director, Belgium Mercedes, director of the School Fray Ramón Pané, Hilario Urbano Marrero, regent of the school and Jesús Contreras, director of the 15-04 educational district.
