They reached that conclusion Minister of the Presidency, Joel Santos Echavarríathe president of the Association of Industries of the Dominican Republic (AIRD), Celso Juan Marranzini, and rector of Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), Julio Sánchez Maríñez, during the fundraising luncheon for the INTEC Scholarship Program with Outstanding Students (PIES).

Speaking on "The link between higher education and business for the country's sustainable development," Marranzini also advocated the qualitative transformation of pre-university education with a view to turning the Dominican Republic into an industrial power and guaranteeing sustainable growth.

Speaking on the topic "A commitment to the present: the role of public policy in the Triple Helix relationship: Government, Academia and Business", Santos stated that the Government is focusing on advance actions, from the Multi-year Government Plan, the National Innovation Policy, the National Qualifications System, Digital Transformation, Zero Bureaucracy and Competitiveness for development.

He stressed that the vision of President Luis Abinader is to turn the Dominican Republic into a developed country in this decade, a challenge that implies doubling the size of the economy by 2030 and which in turn will allow the generation of 1.4 million jobs by that date and eliminate the extreme poverty.

“To achieve the aspiration of doubling the GDP, the development model must change to one where the protagonist is the formation of capital via the promotion of investment. It is precisely the productive sectors that play a leading role in the accelerated growth strategy”, said Santos.

While Sanchez Marinez put into context the importance of the INTEC Program with Outstanding Students (PIES) as part of the institution's contribution to business development.

“Under the PIES, since 1987, more than 3,488 deserving students from different socio-economic strata and provinces of the country have benefited. This year alone, 313 students benefited, 50 in the category of young talents and 263 in the meritorious one, ”said the INTEC rector.

He stressed that, from its pillars of scientific, technological and productive development, this house of higher studies has become a reference partner of the government and business sectors.

"In INTEC they have had and will have even more the competent and willing, receptive and proactive partner to assume with responsibility and dedication any initiative and project compatible with its nature, its purposes and its principles, which are related to the best interests and for the benefit of a better nation,” said Sánchez Maríñez.

He assured that "every peso and every penny invested with or in INTEC, in programs, in projects, in infrastructure and laboratories, in scholarships or in donations, is guaranteed a very good use and return in favor of the comprehensive and sustainable development of the country."

About the event

The fundraising lunch was supported by representatives of various state institutions and private companies, and is part of the program of activities to commemorate the university's 50th anniversary.

The funds raised at the lunch, which was held at the El Embajador hotel, will be allocated to the INTEC Scholarship Program with Outstanding Students (PIES), a pioneering initiative of the university, which for more than 30 years has allowed scholarships with a career university completes 1,400 students of excellence from various parts of the country.

INTEC was founded by a group of professionals concerned about the limited supply of national higher education on October 9, 1972, and in its 50-year history it has graduated more than 33 professionals. The PIES program was founded in 1987 with the purpose of recognizing talented students from all over the country and offering them scholarships so that they have access to quality higher education.
