Journalists join the fight against Gender Violence


SANTO DOMINGO. The journalists Felivia Mejía and Ivonne Ferreras were the winners of the first and second place, respectively, of the journalistic contest "Gender Equality for a Life without Violence".

This fourth edition of the contest that each year they organize Philip Morris Dominicana adjacent to Genre Studies Center of INTEC University and the Dominican Association of Journalists with a Gender Perspective, awarded the journalists with a monetary prize of RD $ 100,000 for the first place and RD $ 75,000 for the second place.

The jury on this occasion was composed of journalists Inés Aizpun, Huchi Lora, and Naivi Frías, Susi Pola, of Profamilia, and Lourdes Contreras, of CEG-INTEC, who awarded the first place to Felivia Mejía from the magazine "La Lupa sin Trabas ", for the work entitled" Mothers face violence and judicial hurdles when demanding maintenance ".

In that same order, the work to which he was awarded the second place went to "The Forgotten Children of Feminicide," by journalist Ivonne Ferreras of digital media 7dias.com.

This prize has as an initiative to seek that the issues addressed contribute to pay greater attention to the issue of gender violence from a perspective of solution, taking into consideration the manifestations, causes and consequences thereof, highlighting the positive impact on the individual aspect and social of living a life free of violence.

"In this fourth edition of the contest we are proud of the results obtained during the process of the different awards and also satisfied that it is increasing the quality of the works, revealing the interest of journalists in collaborating with the common objective of the institutions that have united in favor of the fight against gender violence, "said Manuel Cabral, Director of Corporate Affairs at Philip Morris Dominicana.

On her side, Álbida Segura, who spoke on behalf of Grisbel Medina, the current coordinator of the Association of Journalists with a Gender Perspective, stated that “this contest year after year represents a great opportunity to consider the way in which we journalists attend the news on gender and intrafamily violence. This initiative has motivated us to find new perspectives to tell these dramatic stories that impact an entire society whose future is conditioned by violent schemes that we have to break. For the Dominican Association of Journalists with a Gender Perspective, the commitment of Philip Morris Dominicana and the Center for Gender Studies of INTEC has been transcendental to establish the issue of gender violence on the local journalistic agenda ”.

Finally, Lourdes Contreras, coordinator of the Center for Gender Studies of INTEC, expressed satisfaction with the quality of the work delivered in this fourth edition as well as the large amount of space that the media has been dedicating to this subject, particularly in print media and digital. He also highlighted the efforts made by journalists to adequately sustain their work with statistical information and correct approaches in dealing with issues related to gender violence, which are often quite complex.

The jury made an honorable mention to Hoy Digital journalist Milizen Uribe for her work called "Serie: Violencia contra las mujeres".

The award ceremony of the Contest, which was held in the Julio Ravelo Room of the INTEC University Fountain, was attended by friends, associates and personalities belonging to entities and organizations that fight against gender violence.
