Steps for education: INTEC performs walk pro-fund scholarships


Santo Domingo.- The Alumni Association (ADE) of Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) made the walk "Steps by Pies 2013", a meeting that brought together graduates, collaborators, professors, students and friends of the institution, for the benefit of the INTEC Program with Outstanding Students (PIES), pioneer since its creation 25 ago years in recognizing academic excellence in the Dominican Republic.

"The PIES is the social responsibility program of INTEC, which sponsors the studies of most of the beneficiaries, as a form of continuous commitment to academic excellence, regardless of social status," explained Julio Molina, president of the Association of Graduates (ADE). "With the initiative of the walk the university opens the opportunity to donate directly to the higher education of outstanding bachelors from all over the country, which has a positive impact on the quality of future life of these and their families," said Molina , who along with the Rector of INTEC, Rolando M. Guzmán, led the walk.

At the meeting, Tammy Vásquez, Public Relations Manager of Claro, delivered the first contribution of 500 one thousand pesos out of a total of two million that the company will allocate to the PIES. The funds were received by Alfonso Casasnovas, the Administrative and Financial Vice-Chancellor of INTEC and the PIES student Ludysa González, representing the fellows.

The start cornetazo that gave formal start to the route, about 3.5 kilometers, was made by the outstanding graduates Marcos Díaz, ultra distance swimmer with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a Master's Degree in Marketing and current Vice Minister of School and University Sports, and Lilliam Fondeur, a specialist in Obstetrics-Gynecology with a Master's Degree in Gender and Development, recognized for promoting women's reproductive and sexual rights. Each year INTEC provides approximately 80 scholarships and currently some young 300 students study under this program. In total, the PIES has sponsored the careers of some 1,433 professionals throughout their 25 years of creation.

The refreshing music of the Urbanova group closed the meeting.

Steps for PIES 2013 was supported by companies such as Orange Dominicana, Corripio Communications Group, Serviport, Body Shop Athletic Club, PIISA, EPS, Popular AFP, Bepensa Dominicana, Mercasid, Nestlé, Grupo Ramos and Grupo Handal. It will close with a concert by Urbanova, a musical group that has recently been highlighted by the freshness of its style, characterized by fusion of rhythms.

The contribution made by the participants consisted of the purchase of an entry kit, at a cost of RD $ 400 (including a T-shirt and a bracelet).
