OUI forms university management for leaders of the Americas

SANTO DOMINGO. The Institute of Management and University Leadership (IGLU) from the Inter-American University Organization (OUI) inaugurated the IGLU 2013 Course, a professional development experience started over 30 years ago in which more than 150 leaders and university professionals from 17 countries around Latin America and the Caribbean participate.

El Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), headquarters of the Executive Directorate of the IGLU, is also one of the venues of the course, which is held in six cities of the region, with seven groups. Two groups started the 29 in July (Guanajuato and Santo Domingo), four start the 5 day in August (Bogotá, Buenos Aires, San José and Santo Domigo) and a group in Florianopolis the 19 in August.

IGLU tries to contribute to the quality of Higher Education through the improvement of university management in the Americas, with a particular focus on leadership, gender equity in the formation of the relief generation and broad access with permanence and achievements. It is a mobility experience of university managers started 30 years ago.

Miguel Escala, Executive Director of the IGLU and former rector of INTEC, led the inauguration event in Santo Domingo, in which 19 executives from INTEC participated as well as officials from higher education institutions in Brazil, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Venezuela and Haiti.

The IGLU 2013 Course is carried out under a mixed modality, characterized by four modules with a common core that comprise concatenated experiences: Contextualization of Higher Education, Leadership, Academic Management and Strategic Management. This mixed modality consists of:

• One face-to-face week and six virtual weeks to work on the modules of the common trunk;
• Six additional virtual weeks to work with two specific modules proposed by each regional headquarters;
• Work in a self-prescribed module to deepen a topic of personal interest;
• A one-week internship (12 exhibits good practices in 9 cities to select one, depending on institutional interests).
• The realization of an intervention project to improve some aspect of his work as university director.

In total, this experience of continuing education of professionals focuses on the development of skills in management and leadership for the best performance of current university functions. As part of the international vision of the IGLU, at the end of the course, the participants will be part of a learning community and a network of experts at the Inter-American level. The OUI supports this initiative that contributes to the creation of common spaces for the formation of better universities and leaders, as well as to improving the quality of higher education in the Americas.
