Work analyzes the issue of gender and youth

The Center for Gender Studies of Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (CEG-INTEC) Oxfam and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia presented the book "Gender Imaginaries in Dominican Youth: Contributions to the debate from the coloniality of power", by the author of researcher and teacher Jeannette Tineo Durán.

The purpose of the work is to provoke a reflection on the context in which social imaginaries are produced, current in the discourses and daily practices of the young population, as new gender models that recreate and sustain domination. It is expected to contribute to the transformation of the logic of subordination and inequality, based on the regulation of gender.

"Imaginaries of gender in Dominican youth" is the result of an investigation carried out with qualitative techniques that allow to communicate, through the voice and the experiences of young people, an approach to the social imaginary and to the habitual task of women and men in their youth. This look allows us to expose and understand the complex inequalities associated with gender and age relations.

Lourdes Contreras, coordinator of CEG-INTEC said that the publication is part of the academy's effort to enrich the bibliographic heritage in gender matters, and in particular the results of this work that strongly present the points of encounter and disagreement youth to understand and assume the different types of gender determinants.

Likewise, Raúl del Rio, Oxfam director in the Dominican Republic, explained that “at Oxfam we are aware that changes in policies and laws are not only necessary to achieve greater equality between men and women. These are media that must be part of other more important ones, such as imaginary ones, more static, lasting over time and that condition life in our society from an early age, reproducing gender roles in older ages. This fact has serious consequences in the maintenance of unequal relationships between men and women over time. "

The book, along three chapters, addresses the themes "Youth and ideals of femininity and masculinity", "Youth cultures and coloniality of youth power" and "Reasons and fissures of social participation".

The text emerges from the desire to understand, the complex dynamics of socialization, assimilation and (re) production of power relations, based on the gender inequalities that young people develop. This understanding constitutes a starting point on the road to the transformation of inequalities in the Dominican context.

The research and the book are part of the project Promoting changes in the social imaginary of the youth of the Dominican Republic to build a society based on a culture of equality and equity between men and women sponsored by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia.

Based on the results of this research and as part of this same project, a communication campaign called ¿y tú ta rankia @? It generates change, building equality between men and women to sensitize and motivate changes that transform existing imaginaries. In addition, a diploma course and several training actions aimed at young people from social organizations were organized and a street theater group was formed that worked pieces inspired by the necessary changes detected in the research.
