MICM, ADIPLAST and INTEC bet on the sustainability of the plastics industry


SANTO DOMINGO.- The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Mipymes (MICM), the Dominican Association of the Plastic Industry (ADIPLAST) and the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) presented the advances and research results of the Plastic Research and Training Center (CCIP), within the framework of a collaboration agreement.

During the meeting, chaired by the MICM minister, Victor -Ito- Bisonó, Manuel Lorenzo, president of ADIPLAST, Julio Sanchez Marinez, rector of INTEC, and the Vice Minister of Industrial Development of MICM, Fantino Polanco, the CCIP initiatives that have been achieved to date within the framework of the Advanced Training and Technical Assistance Project for the Sustainability and Competitiveness of the Plastic sector in the Dominican Republic, started in 2021, were presented.

“About a year ago we inaugurated this center and today we are verifying its results with strong facts. We have put at the service of the country's plastics industry the ideal technical and technological capacities for the growth and sustainable development of the sector and all this would not have been possible without the will, support and triple helix collaboration between the State, industry and academia. ”, affirmed Bisonó.

On his side, the rector stated that the alliance between the MICM, INTEC and ADIPLAST is a celebration of innovation in the country. "This is an example of the triple helix that must work and that has led many countries to sustainable development, that in Latin America we still have to try to keep up with the Asian countries in this regard," he specified, at the time of point out that the CCIP promises a lot in terms of training, starting with the concentration in plastics.

Likewise, Manuel Lorenzo, said that throughout the years ADIPLAST, together with the industries of the sector it represents, has set itself the goal of accompanying its partners in staying at the forefront with equipment and evolutionary processes and the creation of values.

“In the Dominican Republic very recently we lacked tools to keep in mind and with high functionality the most valuable resource that any industry has, which is human capital. We take a first step to sow the seed that can fill this great void over time, the inclusion in the academy of technical and technological facilities, testing and training laboratories, specialized careers for our sector”, Lorenzo pointed out.

The Economist Roberto Despradel presented the results of the study "Contribution of the plastics sector to the Dominican economy", the first investigation of the CCIP. Luis Toirac explained the Concentration in Plastics for Engineering careers at the university, active since November 2022, with seven specialized subjects on the subject.

Additionally, the in charge of INTEC Laboratories, jessica happy walked the portal CCIP website, and the consultant José Féliz presented the Institutional Strategic Plan of the CCIP 2023-2026, its mission, vision, values, objectives and organizational chart.

According to the study, the 472 plastic industries in the country generate more than 41,485 direct and indirect jobs and contributed RD$11,127 million taxes to the treasury in 2021. In foreign trade, exports of plastic products reached US$546 million during the year 2021, which means 4.7% of the total exports of the Dominican economy. It is the main non-mining export product.

The CCIP, which is based at INTEC, has a classroom and a laboratory with plastic extrusion and injection machines, donated by ADIPLAST, as well as complementary equipment.

The event, held in the Social Security Auditorium of the university, was attended by a representation of the board of directors and managers of the member industries of ADIPLAST, academic authorities of INTEC, students of Engineering careers and representatives of the MICM.
