Master's students in Gender and Equality Policies in Education explore the social construction of femininity and masculinity


During an academic seminar organized by the Center for Gender Studies and INAFOCAM, students reflected on the cultural construction of gender in the narratives of Western modernity.

SANTO DOMINGO.- The teachers y teachers students de Master's degree in Gender and Equality Policies in Education of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) were part of the academic seminar “Social Construction of Femininity and Masculinity”, an encounter that explores, from anthropology and sociology, the cultural construction of femininity and masculinity in the narratives of Western modernity.

During the training sessions, the sixth cohort of the master's program analyzed the contributions of contemporary feminist currents regarding being "woman" and "man" as categories produced by power relations that sustain inequality and the oppression of women in the face of male privilege.

They also delved into the mechanisms that produce gender-generational identities, sexualities, and bodies, considering the surveillance and punishment devices imposed by the patriarchal order to maintain identities aligned with the dominant logic.

During the meeting, Desiree Del Rosario, Coordinator of the Gender Studies Center at INTECShe reflected on the importance of promoting the development of skills that allow graduates to implement educational programs that promote equality between men and women, with the aim of responding to the demands for respect without any discrimination.

She also stated that several educational activities were held during the meeting to help students recognize society's expectations and values ​​regarding being a man and being a woman. The facilitators for this edition were: Larry José Madrigal Rajo, coordinator of the Bartolomé de las Casas Center y Walberto Tejeda, representative of the Masculinities program from the Bartolomé de las Casas Center of Central America.

Madrigal Rajo is a psychotherapist, theologian, university professor, and researcher. Walberto Tejeda is a philosopher, educator, and expert on masculinities, gender, and social transformation. Tejeda gave the lecture “Masculinities also migrate: Validity and dissidence in the hegemonic model of masculinity" during the XIII Dominican Conference of Gender Studies of INTEC.

Both specialists guided the participants to understand the implications of the meanings of hegemonic masculinity in the educational field, through group dynamics, playful exercises, reading checks and analysis of musical and promotional content.
