The Environmental Network of Dominican Universities (RAUDO) holds its first Health & Environment Conference


 

 

Santo Domingo. The Environmental Network of Dominican Universities (Raudo), held its first conference called "Health & Environment" at the facilities of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), with the purpose of creating a space for discussion and exchange of experiences of environmental work in the different universities that integrate it.

The Conference had as international guest Dr. Jean Remy Davee Guimaraes, Marine Biologist, Associate Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, who gave a lecture on the results of a case study of mercury contamination in the Amazon, Project CARUSO ; This conference, in turn, was commented on by a panel made up of experts from three member universities of the Network. This research was aimed at explaining whether mining was the main source of mercury contamination in the region's environment.

The results of an investigation directed by Arch. Marcos Barinas of the Ibero-American University (UNIBE) on Sustainable University Campus were also presented, where urban strategies were established in the UNIBE environment to turn this area into a sustainable University District offering solutions for the transportation, solid waste management, energy saving among others.

The activity concluded with the presentation of the environmental work (experiences, good practices, work with the communities, proposals or research works, etc.) of the universities. They presented their work at the Conference on  Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo, (INTEC), the Technological Institute of Cibao Oriental (ITECO), the Open University for Adults (UAPA), the Action Pro Education and Culture University (UNAPEC), the Fernando Arturo de Meriño Agroforestry University (UAFAM), the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), Universidad Católica Nordestana (UCNE), Universidad Católica Santo Domingo (UCSD), Universidad Católica Tecnológica del Cibao (UCATECI), Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE), Universidad Nacional Evangélica (UNEV) and Universidad National Pedro Henríquez Ureña, (UNPHU).

In addition to those already mentioned, the Raudo is made up of the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), the Universidad Católica Tecnológica de Barahona (UCATEBA), the Universidad Central del Este (UCE), the Universidad ISA, and the Universidad Tecnológica de Santiago (UTESA), and its general objective is to articulate the potentialities of Dominican higher education institutions for the dissemination of topics related to environmental sustainability from education, research and extension. 

The Network will soon participate in the launch for Latin America and the Caribbean of the World Alliance of Universities for Environment and Sustainability (GUPES) of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) to be held in Bogotá, Colombia.

The first day of Health and Environment was sponsored by the Falcondo Foundation and the Community of Practice on Eco-systemic Approach in Human Health, CoPEH LAC.
