Julio Sánchez Maríñez is sworn rector of INTEC
SANTO DOMINGO. -The Board of Regents of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) swore in Dr. Julio Sánchez Maríñez as rector of the university for a period of three years (2021-2024), making him the ninth person to hold the position in the 48 years since the university was founded.
Sánchez Maríñez replaces doctor Rolando M. Guzmán, who exhausted the maximum regulatory period of management of three consecutive periods, between 2011 and 2020. The selection of Sánchez Maríñez was announced last November, and it occurred after exhausting an extensive selection process that It began in March 2019, with the call for the presentation of candidatures, in accordance with the provisions of the General Statutes and the Regulations for the Selection and Appointment of the Rector and Vice-Rectors of INTEC.
When pronouncing the central words of the ceremony, the new rector stressed that INTEC is conceived and projected as the partner of the governmental and business sectors and of all the actors interested in the social, productive, scientific and technological transformation of the Dominican Republic.
"At INTEC they will have even more the competent and willing, receptive and proactive partner to assume with responsibility and dedication all initiatives and projects compatible with their nature, aims and principles, in favor of a better nation," he said.
He considered that the ceiling of the quality of the university is the one that it embodies in its students, its professors and its graduates, for which he expressed his commitment to preserve and cultivate collegiality in the academic field of university life.
Sánchez Maríñez stressed that it will support research in its broadest sense, ensure an updated, differentiated and innovative academic offer, maintain and expand national and international interuniversity agreements, reinforce teacher development initiatives associated with curricular development and continue to expand accreditation achievements international academic programs.
The event was chaired by Franklin García Fermín, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology; by the engineer Jordi Portet, president of the Board of Regents of INTEC; and Rolando Guzmán, outgoing rector of INTEC.
Jordi Portet, highlighted that INTEC opens a new chapter in its history with the swearing in of Dr. Maríñez, who assumes at a time that poses an uncertain future, but at the same time challenging and full of opportunities.
The president of the Board of Regents pondered that, faced with the scenario caused by the pandemic, INTEC has chosen the path of its principles, values and statutory mission, which he said were expressed in actions such as the continuity of the work, the look towards the future and the deployment of initiatives such as the manufacture of mechanical ventilators and protective face masks for health personnel.
The activity was carried out in person, in accordance with the capacity limitation recommendations recommended by the authorities before COVID-19, and was broadcast live on the university's YouTube channel, through which more than 500 viewers joined, between businessmen, authorities, representatives of the diplomatic corps and different national and international academic institutions.
Professional Profile
Sánchez Maríñez is a psychologist graduated from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), with specialty studies in Planning and Administration of Higher Education from INTEC and a doctorate in Organizational and Management Studies from the Business School of the State University of New York , in Albany.
He has extensive experience in educational management as a secondary school principal at Colegio Dominicano De La Salle; Executive Secretary of the National Council for Higher Education (CONES) and teaching and research assistant to leading professors from the Business and Sociology Schools of the State University of New York, in Albany. He served as rector of the Salomé Ureña Higher Teacher Training Institute (ISFODOSU) from 2013 to 2020.
At INTEC he was vice-rector for Research and Liaison (2008-2013); Dean of the Business Area (1994-1995); Executive Director of Permanent Education and Scientific Dissemination (1985-1986), and has taught in undergraduate and graduate programs.
He has extensive experience in business and government consulting for international and non-governmental organizations, as a facilitator, lecturer and researcher on various topics. In addition, he is an author with publications on human capital, leadership, higher education, talent management, youth and participation, behavior analysis, among many other topics.
He is also a member of various international organizations such as the American Management Association, executive secretary of the University Educational Network of Regional Knowledge and Action (Reduce); Latin American Coalition for Teaching Excellence and member of the Coordinating Committee of the Regional Program for the Development of the Teaching Profession in Latin America and the Caribbean.
