Intecianos win ODEBRECHT 2012 Award


Santo Domingo. A team composed of three Civil Engineering students from Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) won the first place of the ODEBRECHT Prize for Sustainable Development 2012, delivered last Wednesday night 28 in March at a ceremony held at the Ambassador Hotel and was headed by Marcos Cruz, ODEBRECHT Superintendent Director and the Minister of Education Higher Science and Technology, Ligia Amada Melo.

The Interacians Ana Medina Pou, Paola Mariel Ramírez and Gabriel Rancier, together with their adviser Professor Tulio Rodríguez, created the project "Reuse of Debris for the manufacture of Fine Aggregate in the City of Santo Domingo". It proposes a new modality for the production of aggregates from debris, helping to reduce the extraction of these in rivers.

The proposal received recognition scrolls and three cash prizes with values ​​of RD $ 200 thousand pesos each. One for the three members of the team and the other two for the project advisor and for the University.

The main objective of this award is to encourage young university students to perceive engineering from the perspective of sustainable development of nations and as a way to generate wealth and jobs, conserving natural resources and respecting the environment. It is also delivered in Brazil, Venezuela, Peru and Angola.

The second place was in the hands of the students Leisa Santos, Ana Vásquez and Zoila R. Pérez of the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), Santiago campus, who received a cash prize of RD $ 300,000.00 divided among the students, the advisor and the university for his project "Sustainable use of rubble in the construction of buildings".

Luis M. Cruz Peña and Alain Berlín Cadio, also from PUCMM Santiago, won the third place and received RD $ 150,000, with the project "Production of energy and organic fertilizer from the installation of biodigesters in pig farms".
