INTEC and USAID/BHA give a workshop on Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management at universities


SANTO DOMINGO – The United States Agency for International Development Office of Humanitarian Response (USAID/BHA) and the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) organized a political-technical workshop to promote the institutionalization of the Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management (GIRD) in the country's universities. 

The training had the participation of directors and teachers of INTEC, of ​​the National University Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU) and the Caribbean University (UNICARIBE), who socialized about the relevance of integrating disaster management in their strategic and operational planning, as well as in the curricular, research and extension components, as well as the substantive functions of the University.

The introductory part of the program was in charge of Juan Ramos, Education Thematic Advisor for the USAID/BHA Regional Disaster Assistance Program, who pointed out the importance of universities integrating specific thematic lines to strengthen the academic focus on disaster management.

On your side, Dante Torres, USAID/BHA Regional Disaster Assistance Program consultant, was responsible for carrying out the development of the workshop and emphasized the need to integrate the GIRD in all areas of development, incorporating both technology and knowledge to achieve important transformations in learning in society.

The workshop, which was held in two working days, was organized by the Vice-Rector for Administration and Finance and the Area of ​​Basic and Environmental Sciences of INTEC. 

As part of the work, the representatives of the participating universities identified the lines of work, possible obstacles and strategic priorities, with a view to integrating the GIRD into their institutions. 

Pamela Michel, in charge of Disaster Risk Management at INTEC, assured that during the training "the participants demonstrated a firm commitment to the implementation of the proposals formulated", and it was agreed to continue working together to achieve the established objectives.  

“The workshop represented an important step towards strengthening the comprehensive management of disaster risk in the universities of the Dominican Republic, reaffirming the commitment of the academic community in building a safer and more resilient future in the face of the challenges posed by risk. of disasters in the country," said Michel.
