INTEC and Purdue University sign agreement to boost research in semiconductors and microchips
Research and development in semiconductors represents a key opportunity for the Dominican Republic on its path towards industrial diversification and digital transformation
SANTO DOMINGO. - El Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) and Purdue University, recognized worldwide for its leadership in science, technology and innovation, signed a strategic collaboration agreement to promote el development de advanced technologies in the microelectronics field and semiconductors or microchips, an essential component in the manufacturing of electronic devices and advanced technological systems.
The collaboration will allow INTEC students and professors to access cutting-edge technologies and Purdue University's specialized laboratories, opening opportunities for collaborative research in microelectronic and semiconductor devices, areas declared of high national priority by President Luis Abinader through decree 324-24 of last June.
“This alliance represents an unprecedented opportunity for INTEC and the Dominican Republic. Semiconductor research is fundamental to the development of emerging technologies, from mobile devices to artificial intelligence. Working together with Purdue University will allow us to advance in this critical area, with the potential to attract investment and generate impact on the industrial development of the country," he said. Julio Sanchez Marinez, rector of INTEC.
Fruit of the agreement signed by Sánchez Maríñez and Dimitrios Peroulis, Senior Vice President, Partnerships and Online at Purdue, exchange programs will be developed that will allow INTEC students and professors to stay at Purdue University, accessing top-level academic and research resources. In addition, professors and researchers from both institutions will be able to collaborate directly on innovative projects.
Purdue will provide technical assistance to INTEC in developing scientific and technological research capabilities. This includes access to laboratories, advanced technology and experts in key areas. It will also help improve its curricula to strengthen the preparation it offers in relation to the technological requirements of microelectronics and semiconductors.
In addition, personalized educational programs will be developed. that adapt to the current needs of the market and the opportunities for technological development in the Dominican Republic.
Impact for the Dominican Republic
Access to advanced research in semiconductors or microchips could spark a new wave of innovation in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, robotics and consumer electronics.
In addition, this agreement strengthens INTEC's international ties, allowing it to participate in global research networks and collaborate on high-impact initiatives. Participation in semiconductor research projects will also allow it to align its efforts with the Dominican government's initiatives in science, technology and innovation, taking advantage of additional resources and financing to support the country's technological development.
“The advancement in semiconductors not only strengthens our internal capabilities, but also positions us as a key player in the region. This collaboration with Purdue will allow us to be at the forefront of technology, contributing to the competitiveness of the Dominican Republic in an increasingly digital and connected world,” added the rector.
Decree 324-24 highlights that "semiconductors (commonly known as "microchips" or "integrated circuits") are essential for the operation of most technological devices and electronic systems, as well as for technological innovation and the development of new applications in the areas of smart vehicles, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, automation, among others."
