INTEC and Philip Morris united in prevention of gender violence


Santo Domingo. The Center for Gender Studies Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) and the company Philip Morris presented the book "Gender equality for a life without violence", which compiles the works that were awarded in the journalistic contest of the same name. The contest was held between the years 2010 and 2014 with the purpose of educating and raising awareness about the problem of violence against women in the Dominican Republic.

The contest was an initiative of Philip Morris, as part of the actions carried out jointly with the Center for Gender Studies of INTEC for eight years, which includes the formation of inter-institutional community support networks, training, editing of educational material and campaigns. of awareness on the problem.

The director of the center, Lourdes Contreras, explained that for the realization of the contest an alliance was also made with the Association of Journalists with Gender Perspectives, with which the production of works of great educational value was achieved, whose main contribution has been to call attention on this issue, as well as educate, sensitize and show the scope that can have the consequences of this scourge that affects so much Dominican society.

The book, which honors the communication effort carried out through the contest, presents journalistic productions that were published in different national media, in which the problems associated with gender inequality are treated from different perspectives, as well as their consequences collateral and its social and economic impact.

The works awarded during these five years were authored by prominent journalists Deyanira Polanco, Riamny Méndez, Bethania Apolinar, Miguel Ponce, Susana Flete, Felivia Mejia, Petra Saviñón, Lisania Batista, Rosa Alcántara, Ángela Sánchez, Xiomara Brito, Olga Agustín , Mitri Jiménez, Ivonne Ferreras, Li Misol, Kirsis Díaz and Elizabeth Encarnación.

Contreras thanked the participation of the group of communicators-it is in the initiative of the contest and emphasized the pedagogical value of the publication that is being delivered, since it can serve in the analysis of cases from the preventive perspective, for the local networks of attention to violence, as well as for journalism schools in universities.

“With this act of putting the book into circulation we put an end to a great initiative that for five years contributed to raising awareness about the problem of gender violence, framed within comprehensive actions that we carry out to support Dominican women to achieve everything their potential and obtain economic security in an environment free of violence and discrimination, ”said Manuel Cabral, Director of Corporate Affairs at Philip Morris. 

In the act of presentation of the book, several dramatizations were carried out by the fifth and sixth grade students of the Fray Ramón Pané school, a campus that is part of a pilot project for the early prevention of gender violence from schools. under the slogan "A school free of Gender Violence", developed by the Center for Gender Studies of INTEC.
