INTEC and the Ministry of Public Health train medical personnel on the management of COVID-19


SANTO DOMINGO. - Before him outbreak de Coronavirus (COVID-2019) that affects the country, the Laboratory of Medical Simulation (SIMLAB) Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), in conjunction with the Ministry of Public Health, trained more than 300 members of the personnel of that governmental entity on the tasks of surveillance, prevention y infection control in health facilities.

Through the practical workshop on the management of COVID-19 and training in infection prevention and control in the face of epidemiological outbreaks of highly contagious diseases, the participants learned about the clinical management of COVID-19, how to carry out the isolation process and how Be placed el personal protection equipment. This, through guidelines and procedures aimed at minimize that transmission risks across health workers, service users, visitors and the environment.

In addition, health specialists received information regarding the management process, Services y transfer pre and interhospital and transfer de samples y laboratory techniques and they have addressed the aspects related to mental health, both of the patient, their relatives and medical personnel.

The workshop, which runs in a simulation format of a real case, includes talks on the epidemiology process and risk communication. While the practical modules focus on the hand washing with soap and water, the placement de sterile gloves, N95 mask and Protection glasses; The Sampling and Services thereof.

In a second practical stage, we explain how to clean the hands with an alcohol-based solution, apply non-sterile gloves, a surgical mask and a disposable gown, as well as the biosafety suit. Another part of the simulation focuses on exercises communication with the press and community. 

After concluding the workshop, which takes place over an 8-hour day, the participants are able to define what are suspected and confirmed cases of COVID-19, use the quality and patient safety policies, and apply preventive measures for the transmission of infections: biosecurity and hospital hygiene.

The courses were designed by academic coordinators of the SIMLAB: doctors Pablo Smester, emergency specialist, and the doctor Scarllen Perez. El teachers Council it is made up of doctors Laura Guzman, Carlos Pichardo, Luis Reyes, Kevin Ysabel, Sila Faxas, Daniel Pierre, Ian Bernal, y Jasmilka Perdomo.

Dr. Smester reported that the main objective of INTEC and the Ministry of Public Health is to convert this workshop and training into a permanent training program that allows the medical staff, as well as all health personnel, to be updated regarding the management of infectious diseases.

About SIMLAB

El Laboratory of Medical Simulation INTEC is a international training center, governed under the guidelines of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and the Latin American Federation in Simulation.

Since 2012, more than 400 trainings have been held that have impacted more than 5,000 people. The laboratory has six classrooms set up for medical simulation in different care spaces, and high and medium fidelity mannequins. It is also a training center authorized by the American Heart Association (AHA) for Basic Life Support, First Aid, Stabilization of Pediatric Emergencies and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support.

Likewise, SIMLAB is the only chapter in the Dominican Republic of International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) for Basic and Advanced Trauma Patient Support courses. Its academic staff is made up of specialists certified nationally and internationally, and its training coordinators hold certificates in Clinical Simulation from Drexel University.

Among the courses that are permanently available are: First aid; Management of the advanced airway and difficult airway; Electrocardiograph; Basic and advanced cardiovascular life support; Cardiopulmonary resuscitation; Basic and advanced trauma patient support and pediatric resuscitation.
