INTEC and the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico will expand joint offerings and collaboration in research


Authorities from both universities celebrated 21 years of uninterrupted collaboration; a UPPR commission visited the INTEC campus to learn about the different classroom and laboratory facilities

SANTO DOMINGO. The Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) and the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico (UPPR) agreed to expand the master's programs and to examine the feasibility of jointly implementing a doctorate in engineering, with the aim of meeting the demand for professionals required by the national productive sector and in the neighboring country.

The universities proposed to continue with the master's degree in Management Engineering, relaunch the specialty y Master in Competitive Manufacturing, as well as the exploration of a doctoral program, attracting specialists who wish to develop in the area that has a wide field of application. In that same sense, the institutions will also promote joint research teams on topics of common interest to both countries, such as: sargassum, efficiency of the electrical system and coastal care.

“It is a great honor and pride to welcome you to our university and to continue strengthening the historical ties that have united us for so long,” said INTEC rector Julio Sánchez Maríñez, when welcoming the UPPR commission, headed by its president, Ernesto Vásquez Martínez.

In this regard, Vásquez Martínez congratulated the university for its recently obtained international accreditation of the mechatronic, electrical and industrial engineering programs by the agency ABET, as well as the constant national leadership positioning of the university in the QS World Ranking.

“Our longest-standing strategic relationship is with INTEC, and this is the result of the clear alignment of our institutional missions and our strong commitment to quality in everything we do,” said the president of the UPPR.

The UPPR commission also included Miriam Pabón, Dean of the Graduate School and Academic Alliances; Carlos González, Vice President of Academic Affairs; Sylvia Rivera, Vice President of Operations; and Glenda Colón, Director of Communications.

Meanwhile, representing INTEC, the Academic Vice-Rector, Arturo Del Villar; María Núñez, Coordinator for INTEC of the alliance programs with UPPR; Carlos Sanlley, Director of Research; Samuel Bonilla, Office Assistant and Carmen Matos, Director of Institutional Communication participated.

Prior to the meeting, the UPPR commission held a meeting with the Dean of Engineering, Cayetano Rodríguez, and toured various specialized classrooms and laboratories on campus, including the Makerspace, HAAS Technical Education Center, among other spaces.

The alliance of more than 21 years between INTEC and UPPR has produced 193 graduates of the Master's Degrees in Management Engineering and Competitive Manufacturing. The first has 12 graduated cohorts and currently the 13th is in progress, as well as a cohort of the Master's Degree in Competitive Manufacturing.
