INTEC and AI Robotix create AI model to investigate Alzheimer's
The project has a functional platform connected to global supercomputing networks that has processed more than 230 studies and scientific articles on the disease; the renowned neurologist Ricardo Allegri joins the project and will lead the next phases.
SANTO DOMINGO - El Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) and the company AI Robotix announced the first advances in their artificial intelligence platform applied to Alzheimer's research, which has a functional model to generate medical hypotheses from large volumes of scientific evidence.
So far this year, the tool has processed more than 232,000 scientific articles and genetic databases, including public and private RNA-Seq sequencing repositories. From this immense volume, the system isolated 3,223 datasets with information that may lead to new explanations about the origin and progression of the disease.
One of the innovative aspects of the project is that the platform is not limited to organizing or summarizing information. Its objective is to generate new scientific hypotheses, test them against the available evidence, and discard early on those that lack sufficient support, allowing efforts to be concentrated on the proposals with the greatest potential to become diagnostic, preventative, or treatment strategies.
As a first successful proof of concept, the platform has completed computer simulations of the mechanical areas of the brain related to the disease.
To support this immense analytical capacity and evaluate potential molecular interactions, the project's server infrastructure has been connected to global scientific supercomputing networks, integrating NVIDIA BioNeMo, Amazon BioDiscovery, and Cloud Sciences.
To consolidate the technological advances resulting from the research and guide the clinical validation, INTEC and AI Robotix announced the incorporation of the renowned Argentine neurologist Ricardo Allegri as principal investigator of the project.
ElINTEC Rector Arturo Del Villar stated that this project is an advance in the field of medicine and demonstrates how artificial intelligence becomes an ally of researchers to develop science.
Juan Carlos Guilbe, CEO of IA Robotix, stated that this step is strategic, as the specialist has extensive experience in the study of dementia and cognitive disorders, as well as in leading international scientific research projects on Alzheimer's.
“Their experience will contribute to strengthening the definition of scientific priorities, methodological supervision, and the articulation between the different phases of the project,” Guilbe said, referring to the initiative, highlighting that the proposals with the best results yielded by artificial intelligence will advance towards experimental studies in preclinical models under this rigorous supervision.
According to the World Health Organization, more than 55 million people worldwide live with some form of dementia, with Alzheimer's being the most common cause. The aging population suggests that this number will continue to rise in the coming decades, making the search for new treatments a priority for the international scientific community.
For INTEC, the collaboration with AI Robotix demonstrates the potential of research developed in the Dominican Republic to integrate into global scientific initiatives. The project brings together specialists in artificial intelligence, neuroscience, medicine, molecular biology, bioinformatics, pharmacology, engineering, and advanced data analysis, with the aim of accelerating scientific discovery through an interdisciplinary approach.
In addition to contributing to the understanding of Alzheimer's disease, the initiative seeks to strengthen national research capabilities, promote the training of highly specialized talent, and position the country as an active participant in generating scientific knowledge applied to major global health challenges. The Alzheimer's Project was officially announced in February of this year, following the signing of a collaboration agreement between INTEC and AI Robotix.
