INTEC recognizes the career of José A. León Asensio


Santo Domingo. The Area of ​​Social Sciences and Humanities of Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) celebrated on Friday, November 16 the eighteenth edition of "A day with an author and his work", paying tribute on this occasion to the renowned Dominican businessman José A. León Asensio.

The educational program A day with the author and his work, celebrated for 18 years, highlights outstanding Dominicans in life whose intellectual, artistic, scientific and / or technological work, serves as an example to youth of the most exalting values ​​of Dominance

On this occasion, with Don León Asensio highlights the quality of the human being, providing knowledge and appreciation of their creative abilities, their life, processes and production conditions in the social and cultural environment of the country.

"For his significant contribution in the field of entrepreneurship and business innovations, as well as his firm and sustained support to initiatives and community, cultural, sports, educational and ecological projects, of great incidence in our society, the Council chose José A. León Asensio as protagonist of the Day with an Author and His Work this year, "said Migdalia Martínez, dean of the organizing area.

The dynamics of the meeting included students from the Santa Teresita, Babeque Secundaria, Triumphare and Colegio Comunidad Educativa Lux Mundi schools, as well as students from the university itself who, through poetry, works and interpretations, exposed the life of León Asencio from his perspectives as a human being, poet and protector of culture.

The students also had the opportunity to share with the author the interview of the author, which is a deeply enriching experience for them.

Through this program, INTEC has recognized personalities such as: Virgilio Díaz Grullón (1995), Elsa Núñez (1996), Gustavo Tavares (1997), Eugenio de Jesús Marcano (1998), Rafael Solano (1999), Mary Pérez de Marranzini (2000), Jorge Cela (2001), María Ugarte (2002), Enrique Armenteros (2003), Mariano Lebrón S. (2004), Freddy Ginebra (2005), Iván García (2006), Alberto Morales (2007), Marcio Veloz M. (2008) and Soucy de Pellerano (2009), José Alcántara Almánzar (2010) and Juan Bolívar Gómez (2011).


A life dedicated to culture, sports and education
The 21 of 1934 was born in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic. After studying the baccalaureate at the Taft School (Watertown, Connecticut), he undertook university studies at the Babson Institute (Wellesley, Massachusetts, USA), where he graduated in Business Administration with a specialty in Marketing. This solid academic training allowed him to transform, together with his brothers, the modest family cigar factory (La Aurora), into one of the most important industrial and commercial groups in the country.

In the León Jimenes Group, he has held important positions, such as the presidencies of the Bohemian Brewery (1983-1986), the Dominican National Brewery (1986-1993) and the Board of Directors of E. León Jimenes (2008). From 2003-2011 he was a member of the Board of Directors of Banco León. The extraordinary professional career developed throughout his life has earned him numerous awards and recognitions, among them: the Silver Ring of Philip Morris Incorporated (1978); the Julián Barceló of the Association of Sports Writers, as Propeller of Sport (1986); the Award for Excellence in Marketing, awarded by COLAM (1989); the Order of Merit Duarte, Sánchez and Mella, Degree of Great Ocial, awarded in 1993; Entrepreneur of the Year 1996; and the Entrepreneur of the Americas Award, granted by the National Federation of Provision Retailers (1999). In 2002 his Holiness John Paul II recognized him with the Order of San Silvestre, Great Silver Insignia.

A man with a great sense of solidarity and dedication to service, coupled with a broad social vision and sensitivity, he has always felt impelled to collaborate in important business, community and sports organizations. Thus, he has been a founding member of the Association for Development, Inc. of Santiago (1961); of the Board of Directors of the American Chamber of Commerce (1984-1991); of the National Theater Board (1986); of the Board of Directors of the Pontificia Madre y Maestra Catholic University (1994-2004); of the Monetary Board of the Central Bank of the Republic (2000-2003); having also served as president of the Dominican Development Foundation (1986); of the Club Art of the Dominican Association of Rehabilitation (1996-2004); Organizing Committee XIII Central American and Caribbean Basketball Tournament (1983) and the Organizing Committee XII Central American and Caribbean Youth and Children's Tennis Tournament (1984).

Don José presided over the Eduardo León Jimenes Foundation when the preparatory work for the construction of the Eduardo León Jimenes Cultural Center (1999) began, and is therefore an essential dynamic agent of the extraordinary project; musician delivered and fervent, was also the inspirer and main executor of the radio station of the aforementioned Foundation: Roots, which began its operations 3 October 2003.
