INTEC presents its Food Safety Laboratory
During the “ConectaTé” meeting organized by the Research Directorate, the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) creates a space for interaction between academia and the productive sectors
SANTO DOMINGO – The Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) presented its Food Safety Laboratory at the ConectaTé strategic networking event. This meeting aimed to connect academia with the production sector to manage risks in the food and beverage supply chain.
The laboratory offers microbiological analysis and scientific-technical consulting for quality control, health risk reduction, and compliance with current regulations. The technical team highlighted the detection of pathogens such as Salmonella, Listeria, and E. coli using genomic techniques. This method allows results to be obtained in less than 48 hours, compared to the week required by traditional procedures.
“At INTEC, we focus on two main areas: first, analytical services. We can detect pathogens, perform microbiological counts, and monitor surfaces, as well as evaluate environments. Our differentiator is applied research,” said Edian Franco, head of the laboratory, during the meeting.
The university's research encompasses the analysis of chicken, pork, and widely consumed vegetables at various points of sale. The laboratory uses metagenomics to identify the microbial composition of food and determine critical contamination points from the source to the final consumer.
INTEC offers surface and environmental monitoring services, tracking programs, and applied research projects to the meat, dairy, and hospitality industries, as well as export companies. These solutions aim to support informed decision-making to prevent foodborne outbreaks, avoid the withholding of export products, and protect consumer confidence.
The meeting between academics, researchers and industry representatives allowed for dialogue on current food safety challenges and opportunities for collaboration on innovative solutions.
