INTEC participates in the International Conference Open Repositories 2025
The university is leading the way toward implementing a National Research Information System (CRIS) for Open Science in the Dominican Republic.
SANTO DOMINGO, DR – The Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) reaffirms its commitment to the advancement of science and transparency in research by participating in the International Conference on Open Repositories 2025, held at the University of Chicago from 14 to 18 in June.
At this prestigious event, the proposal “Towards a National CRIS: Building and Perspectives for Open Science in the Dominican Republic" was presented by Manuel Made, Publications Coordinator y Teaching researcher from INTEC, who had the collaboration of Elsi Jiménez, director of the Emilio Rodríguez Demorizi library of the University.
In the presentation aimed at promoting scientific visibility and collaboration, Madé stated that the creation of a National Research Information System (CRIS) in the Dominican Republic represents a crucial opportunity to enhance scientific dissemination and promote transparency in research processes.
“Currently, the limited number of digital platforms in academic and non-academic research institutions restricts the visibility of valuable scientific information, such as projects, publications, patents, theses, researcher and laboratory profiles, among others, hindering the efficient dissemination of knowledge,” he said.
He added that a national CRIS will consolidate a digital infrastructure that will not only highlight scientific achievements but also foster cooperation between national and international institutions, improve competitiveness, and advance research policy objectives.
With this project, INTEC and its collaborators seek to establish a culture of open science, integrating principles of transparency, open access, and collaboration in scientific research, which will strengthen the foundation for a more robust and sustainable future. The proposal describes the steps to develop a national CRIS with a comprehensive approach to advancing science in the Dominican Republic, drawing on success stories and lessons learned.
DSpace-CRIS: the technology behind the initiative
To develop this fundamental tool, INTEC has selected DSpace-CRIS, the only open-source tool specifically designed for this purpose. This powerful solution, developed by 4Science, will enable the construction of a robust and flexible digital infrastructure capable of integrating and managing the vast amount of information on national research.
This effort seeks to strengthen the country's scientific competitiveness and promote more effective public research policies. "We extend special thanks to 4Science for developing such a valuable tool and for its contribution to the open science ecosystem," said Madé.
