INTEC awards certificates to first graduates of the Diploma in Climate Transparency

SANTO DOMINGO – The Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) certified 28 technicians in Climate Transparency and Greenhouse Gas Inventory Process, as part of Climate Transparency Capacity Building Project (CBIT).

The initiative is financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and executed by Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and Center for Agricultural and Forestry Development (CEDAF).

Graduates of the diploma will be able to get involved in activities associated with Sustainable Development Goal 12 on "Ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns." They addressed content such as conducting inventories of greenhouse gases in the country from planning, data collection, preparation, processing, data backup and presentation of the final report for publication in the respective documents at the national level.

They also acquired knowledge on how to use the software of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the importance of these instruments for the country to fulfill its commitments before the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

"Each professional, from each of the institutions they represent, will be able to collaborate in collecting data of higher quality and will contribute to facilitating the process that the central government must carry out periodically for the preparation of inventories," said Rosaura Pimentel, coordinator of the program and professor and researcher at INTEC.

The act of awarding the certificates began with the words of Armando Barrios, INTEC's vice-rector for Research and Outreach, who thanked the collaboration between the institutions involved in training students on climate impact issues.

"The fact that you are being formed reflects the sense of responsibility and citizen commitment that you have with these important issues, and the institutions that are here supporting also have that commitment," he explained in his speech.

Karen Hedeman, CBIT project coordinator, and Kenia Feliz, in charge of the Department of Metrics and Transparency of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, also reflected their degree of satisfaction at closing the training process of the first promotion together with the coordination of the teacher Pimentel.

The graduate student Pamela Tejada, who collaborates in the INTEC Analytical and Environmental Services laboratory, spoke a few words of thanks to the teachers and organizers of the training on behalf of the participants.

Hedeman reported that a second version of the course will be held and will be aimed mainly at technicians from the public sector, while the third will be aimed at the private sector.

La CBIT initiative seeks to strengthen knowledge about climate change in the Dominican Republic. Its objective is to generate climate information and knowledge within the framework of the Paris Agreement, helping to overcome the barriers that prevent the country from complying with its international climate transparency commitments.
