SANTO DOMINGO. - The Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) will carry out a study on the seismic threat and risk in the interaction zone between the Northern Fault, the Cibao Basin and the Samaná Peninsula, using 3D imaging technology.

This research is one of eight that the university will carry out with funding from the National Fund for Innovation and Technological Scientific Development (FUNDOCyT) of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (Mescyt), which assigned a total of RD $ 57.6 million pesos to INTEC.

INTEC is the institution de private higher education with largest number of awarded projects en the call corresponding to the year Mescyt 2023. The university will research topics such as environment and natural resources, physics, mathematics, biology, energy and biofuel.

In the letter of approval of funds for the projects that the academic authorities of INTEC received, the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Franklin García Fermín, as well as the Vice Minister of Science and Technology, Genaro Rodríguez Martínez, affirm that the commitment and The dedication demonstrated by the INTEC team of researchers is fundamental for the advancement of science and technology in the Dominican Republic.

Regarding the environment and natural resources, INTEC will carry out the research “Estimation, detention and dynamics of the transport of plastic waste in the Ozama River”, a study that delves into the origin of the waste that reaches that tributary.

Likewise, INTEC will lead two investigations in the field of mathematics: “Application of multi-step iterative methods to optimization problems” and “Digital Interactive Mathematics 2.0”.

INTEC researchers will also carry out a study on “Multi-omics approach for the conservation and management of Magnolias (Magnoliaceae) in the Dominican Republic”, and another on the “Comprehensive characterization of the species of Amyris (guaconejo) of the Dominican Republic”, both in the biology segment, and aimed at the conservation of these species.

On the topic of energy and biofuels, the research that INTEC will develop will be: “Methodology for the optimization of operational reserves in the wholesale electricity market of the Dominican Republic with high penetration of variable renewable energy” and “Development of digital co-simulation environments for the control of intelligent electrical microgrids”.

INTEC researchers are organized into 23 research groups on various topics and carry out nearly 34 investigations with the university's own funds.
