INTEC inaugurates works of Infrastructure Master Plan


President Danilo Medina inaugurated this Wednesday the work of the Infrastructure Master Plan of the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), a ten-year campus construction project, whose first Engineering Building has received a donation from the Huáscar Rodríguez Herrera and Cementos Cibao Foundation.

The donation of cement represents an 30% of the total value of the building, valued at RD $ 150 million pesos and is part of the university-business linkage actions promoted by INTEC to strengthen education.

In addition to the cement for the building, the foundation will donate three postgraduate scholarships for the best students of the careers of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering of 2014.
In his speech, the rector Rolando Guzmán stressed that the Executive Power will integrate the INTEC's Infrastructure Master Plan into the Public Sector Investment Plan, as it has been identified as an investment of high social profitability.

"Investing in quality education has a high rate of return. INTEC is a quality university within reach of majorities whose sole owner is Dominican society. We are a private institution, of public service, nonprofit by statute, which is the heritage of its graduates and the community of teachers and students that integrates it, "said Guzmán. The rector also thanked the Huáscar Rodríguez Foundation for investing in the development of engineering in the country.

Currently, INTEC has two scholarship programs with their own funds: the INTEC Program with Outstanding Students (PIES), which in the last 26 years has awarded scholarships to 1,472 high school graduates, some 60 each year just for its high academic rates, and specialized scholarships . The third type of facility is the Presidential Scholarship, which the Government inaugurated this year with 32 students of limited resources, one for each province of the country.

The first phase of the INTEC Master Plan, which will be extended in stages over the next few years, also includes a new building for the Health Sciences Area and another for Postgraduate Studies. The construction of the Engineering Building will begin in 2014.

The plan seeks to improve the user experience of the INTEC campus and is developed by the architects firm Cristóbal Valdez y Asociados.

The inauguration ceremony was led by President Medina, Outstanding Exit of INTEC, accompanied by Rolando M. Guzmán, Rector of INTEC, Laura Acra, President of the Board of Regents, Denisse M. Rodríguez de Fernández, President of Cementos Cibao, Ligia Amada Melo, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCyT), José Ramón Peralta, Administrative Secretary of the Presidency, Cruz Amalia Rodríguez and Silvia Vela, of the foundation.

The ceremony highlighted the presence of outstanding 32 baccalaureates, representatives of different provinces of the country, who in August of this year began their studies at INTEC under the Presidential Scholarship Program, sponsored by the Presidency of the Republic.

The INTEC is a non-profit university that has no owner and is administered by a Board of Regents, which is periodically renewed and is composed of prominent professionals from different areas of national life, half of them graduates.

Huáscar Rodríguez Foundation
Created as the entity that carries out works of social responsibility of Cementos Cibao, the Huáscar Rodríguez Foundation supports various social and cultural works, mainly in the communities of Jarabacoa and in the area of ​​health and geriatrics. He has invested in higher education with an important donation to the Higher Institute of Agriculture (ISA).
