INTEC inaugurates new Postgraduate and Health Sciences buildings


SANTO DOMINGO. The Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) inaugurated this Monday 6 of February two new buildingsThat of Postgraduate Courses, which bears the name of one of its founders and past rector, Eduardo Latorre, Y de Health Sciences, in honor of the outstanding teacher and academic researcher, Ana Mercedes Henriquez.

The handover ceremony for the buildings took place at 6:00 in the afternoon on the academic campus, and was led by the mMinister of Education, Andres Navarro; the rector from the academy, doctor Rolando M. Guzmán, and the Chairman of the Board of Regents, licensed Mary Fernández.

“The buildings that we inaugurate today were made to make a difference, and our aspiration is that its walls generate ideas and results that Dominican society can be proud of. I am sure that we will achieve it ”, expressed the Rector of INTEC, when delivering the central speech of the act.

With the inauguration of the new buildings, INTEC advances with the development of the Infrastructure Master Plan that started in March 2013 and that is constituted in a ten-year project that contemplates transformations to the academic campus. Both buildings represent a total inversion ascending to RD $ 470 million with departures of the State, private sector and own funds of the university.

A growing campus

Located in the center of the academic campus, the new building of Postgraduate Courses of INTEC has Sqm 2,600 of construction, five floors with 13 classes, four rooms of group study and a radial classroom, with approximate capacity for 50 people.

En fifth floor it is enabled with multipurpose social spaces. On its first floor, it has an esplanade that connects with the main square of the campus and in which a space for modular cafeterias or food court will function.

While the new building of Health Sciences has Sqm 6,415 of construction and 17 classes, 4 cubicles study, 19 laboratories specialized, which include microbiology, medical simulations, anatomy, among others.

Latorre and Henríquez: their traces

Eduardo Latorre was born in Santo Domingo on December 12, 1941. He was founder, teacher and rector of INTEC for two consecutive periods 1976-1984; Secretary of State for Foreign Relations between 1996-2000 and official of the State Sugar Council (CEA) and the Ministry of Finance.

During his professional career he obtained several awards, including the Supreme Silver Jaycees, in 1991, and several decorations as an outstanding diplomat by the governments of Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, France and China. In addition, INTEC awarded him the Doctorate Honoris Causa in University Administration in 1984. Latorre died at the age of 61 on Monday, June 16, 2003, in the city of Miami.

Ana Mercedes Henríquez was born in Puerto Plata on September 21, 1931. She was a doctor in Pharmacy and Chemical Sciences from the University of Santo Domingo, ideologist and promoter of the BIO-INTEC research days and designer of the pedagogical methodology of Biology at the university .

She was also a founding member of the INTEC-Ecológico student group, the first to bring together university professors and students in collaboration with companies and institutions, with the purpose of developing awareness and promoting the care of natural resources. He passed away at 81 years of age, on March 26, 2012.
