INTEC will teach a concentration in Mining and Metallurgy with the support of the University of Chile and Barrick Pueblo Viejo


SANTO DOMINGO. - El Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), the Universidad de Chile y Barrick they announced a concentration in Mining and Metallurgy for students of Civil Engineering e Industrial from that university, a program that will be equipped with professional elective subjects in accordance with the operational needs demanded by the modern mining industry in the country.

La curricular offer was designed by INTEC, Together with the School of Mining of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences University of Chile and consists of 12 credits that will enable future professionals to practice as mining engineers, with knowledge in the areas of Geometallurgy, Fundamentals of Mineralurgical and Metallurgical Processes; Fundamentals of Open Pit Mining Planning and Operation; and, Mining Design, Drilling and Blast.

The presentation event, which took place in the INTEC Social Security Auditorium, was headed by the university president, Julio Sanchez Marinez; The president of Barrick Pueblo Viejo, Juana Barcelo and vice minister of science and technology, Genaro Martínez. Likewise, dozens of students from INTEC's Civil Engineering and Industrial Engineering courses gathered.

When offering welcome words to the event, the rector of INTEC stated that the concentration or minor in Mining and Metallurgy is an initiative that will allow sustainable development in the area of ​​mining. “Without Barrick Pueblo Viejo, without its interest in the development of the country and the development of human capital, this would not be possible. This is the type of alliance that INTEC privileges and is proud to deserve,” emphasized Sánchez Maríñez, while highlighting the other concentrations that are taught at INTEC with both business and state support.

Meanwhile, Juana Barceló indicated that, to make the training program possible, INTEC, Barrick Pueblo Viejo and the University of Chile were working for more than a year. She maintained that the purpose of the concentration is to expand knowledge in the field of mining.

“This concentration is an important step to continue training professionals and elevate the country's mining industry. Responsible mining matters and contributes,” said the president of Barrick Pueblo Viejo while calling on students to explore this opportunity for their professional development and national development.

The coordinator of the INTEC Civil Engineering career, Alexander Pimentel, who will also be in charge of coordinating the concentration, explained the academic details of the program, which is aimed at term students, as well as engineering professionals. .

The Civil and Industrial Engineering students who participated in the activity valued this concentration because it will allow them to train in an area such as mining, whose academic offering is limited at the national level. “This concentration is a plus, we will not have to go abroad to study mining or if we go to study for a master's degree, we will already have a very good foundation,” said Diego Santos, a Civil Engineering student at INTEC.

During the meeting it was announced that civil and industrial engineering professionals will be able to opt for an international diploma taught by INTEC from the Directorate of Permanent Education.

The new concentration in Mining and Metallurgy joins the range of concentrations offered by the university to its engineering students in areas such as Renewable Energy, Artificial Intelligence Applied to Electronic Systems, Home and Building Automation, Maintenance, controls and industrial communication and financial management of ERP/SAP systems.

About concentration

The mining engineer is the professional responsible for the extraction of minerals at the planning, exploration, evaluation and exploitation stages in a sustainable manner, minimizing environmental impacts.

The Mining and Metallurgy Concentration program will be taught by professors from the University of Chile, a country that has managed to position itself for a curricular offer that ranges from mining technical workshops, the Civil Mining Engineering career, the Doctorate in Mining Engineering , up to a master's degree in Business Management and Management Mining Industry Version.
