INTEC graduates first class of the master's degree in Data Sciences
SANTO DOMINGO. -The Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) awarded degrees to 865 new undergraduate and graduate professionals, including the first 28 graduates of the Master in Data Science, during the sixty-seventh graduation of the university.
The Master's program in Data Science began in 2020 in virtual mode, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The graduates additionally took certifications from the Fuse Machines and SAS MOOC platform, both associated with INTEC, among the certifications the following stand out: Fundamentals in Artificial Intelligence (Computer Science); Micromaster in Artificial Intelligence (Machine Learning and Deep Learning) and Specialization in Artificial Intelligence (Computer Vision and neurolinguistic programming), also the SAS specialization in Data Mining and Data Visualization.
The first professionals also graduated from bachelor's degrees in Accounting and Financial Analytics y Marketing and Digital Business, two new degree programs with which INTEC responds to the needs of professionals demanded by the productive sectors.
The rector Julio Sánchez Maríñez, when addressing the graduating students, highlighted that INTEC is a magnet that attracts talented and hardworking young people from all corners of the country and the world. “INTEC is established as a privileged space for quality training and research, cultivating professional skills, human values and social commitment and promoting creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation.”
Sánchez Maríñez highlighted that in the sixty-seventh graduation more than 30% of the graduates come from the provinces. From the East a total of 48, from La Altagracia, Hato Mayor, El Seibo, La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís and Monte Plata; 63 of Western Cibao: Dajabón, Montecristi, Valverde, Santiago Rodríguez, Puerto Plata, Santiago, Espaillat, Hermanas Mirabal, La Vega and Monseñor Nouel.
Likewise, he pointed out that 32 graduates are from Cibao Oriental: San Francisco de Macorís, Sánchez Ramírez, María Trinidad Sanchez and Samaná; From the Central South: San Cristóbal, Azua, Peravia and San José de Ocoa come 46 graduates, and from the Western South a total of 125 who come from San Juan, Elías Piña, Barahona, Bahoruco, Independencia and Pedernales.
Beyond national borders, the rector highlighted the graduates of different nationalities: 11 from the United States, 9 from Venezuela, 4 from Puerto Rico, 2 from Colombia, 2 from Cuba, 2 from Haiti, 2 from Mexico, 2 from Peru, 1 from Spain, 1 from Curacao, 1 from Honduras, 1 from India and 1 from Switzerland, for a total of 39.
Sánchez Maríñez stated that INTEC students and graduates stand out for their academic merits, but also for their human and citizen values. Among those he recognized was Ramón Antonio Crousset, who graduated from Biomedical engineering and works on innovative projects, such as a vital signs monitor, and Matthews Rosario Espinal, of Mechatronics Engineering, pilot of the rover vehicle that allowed the Dominican Republic and INTEC to obtain first place in the 2020 NASA world competition as a member of the Apollo 27 group and who was a volunteer with the Fire Department providing his services after the explosion in San Cristóbal last month of August.
While the prominent swimmer Marcos Díaz, who was the guest speaker at this graduation, urged young people to take on challenges in professional life and warned about “easy” shortcuts. “Professional life will not be free of unseemly proposals that, in general, tend to appear very tempting, but disguised with the appeal of ease, they could, in the best of cases, distance you from your north and your dreams,” he said. . Díaz is a graduate of the Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and the Master's Degree in Marketing from INTEC and in recognition of his professional career of excellence and his notable human values, he was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Award in 2010.
“INTEC prepared us to successfully deal with and navigate the most hectic waters of professional life. “Classrooms give us tools, their application is maximized with knowledge, the fruit of life experiences and continuous learning,” he added.
During the ceremony, 517 women and 348 men were invested, of which 433 graduates (50.06%) belong to the undergraduate level and 432 (49.94%) to the postgraduate level. Among those graduating students was Camila de Peña, a graduate in Economics, who obtained the highest index of the class and gave the speech on behalf of all the graduating students.
“A few years ago, when we graduated from high school, we implicitly assumed the commitment to represent Dominican youth, a youth with a desire for justice, a desire for equality and who assumes a social commitment to be honest, hard-working and honest people. At this moment, this day, that we will leave this room as graduates, engineers, doctors... our duty to our country, our mentors, family members and generations to come is even greater, to work for a better world, to denounce wrongdoing and preach the right thing, by example!” she said excitedly.
Likewise, Marqui Ramos, a Biotechnology major, expressed the Graduate Oath at the sixty-seventh INTEC graduation.
Statistics
Of the 865 graduates, 178 concluded their academic programs with honors, of that total, 89 are Summa Cum Laude; 52 Magna Cum Laude and 37 graduated Cum Laude. Likewise, 13 of them belong to the INTEC Program with Outstanding Students (PIES), a pioneering initiative of the university that grants study scholarships for excellent students. Of the PIES graduates, eleven graduate with academic honors: ten (10) Summa Cum Laude and one (1) Magna Cum Laude.
Of the total number of graduates, 25.78% correspond to the Area of Social Sciences and Humanities; 24.86% to the Health Sciences Area; 23.93% to the Engineering Area; 21.27% belong to the Economics and Business Area; 4.16% Area of Basic and Environmental Sciences. Likewise, 59.77% are women and 40.23% are men.
