INTEC classifies among the first 25 places of regional programming competence

The "Code Raiders of Chaos" team, composed of three INTEC students, represented the Dominican Republic for the first time in the Regional Final of the Collegiate Programming International Competition of the American Computing Machinery (ACM-ICPC) for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

The Dominican team was made up of the winners of the first three places of the 6.5 Competition (internal) Intec Summer Programming 2010, Carlos Toribio (Electronics), Aronis Mariano (Mechatronics) and Richard Ramos (Systems), accompanied by his coach, Carlos Joa , and the director of the ACM-ICPC for INTEC, Eligio Cabrera. At the ACM-ICPC, held from 21 to 24 in October of this year at the University of Information Sciences (UCI) in Havana, Cuba, the intecianos managed to solve three algorithmic programming problems, which placed them in the 23 position among the 200 participating teams, many of whom had competed in previous versions of the event. Cuba participated with 28 teams.

The participating teams were first ordered by the number of “exercises” solved: the more they solved, the better positioned they were for the final ranking. Then, the tied teams were ranked according to the penalty they accumulated. This penalty consisted of the sum of the times (in minutes) in which the team solved the exercises, plus an additional 20 minutes for each incorrect submission.

INTEC promotes programming competencies to create and maintain a culture of this subject in the country, promote the associated careers offered by the university and expand the Dominican presence in the international arena of programming.

For the 2012, it has been proposed to the Dominican Republic as the venue for the finals of this competition among Dominican universities and they are prepared to be represented by more than one team and have more possibilities to qualify and be among the first five places in the region. "For this purpose, they have formed a algorithm and programming club, which involves all the INTEC Engineering students in algorithmic programming in the various subjects," explained Cabrera.
